For my credit card. So he can reverse the charges. But he didn’t. He took the stuff off that was not supposed to be on my bill and charged me again. So now there is a charge on my credit card that should not be… I’m not a happy customer and will not go back
I went for the first time the other night around 6 PM. Walking inside was impressive – beautiful interior. Eerily empty. I found and asked someone if they were open – and they were. Seated at a table; one other table in the entire restaurant had a group at it.
My first thought: I want to start hosting dinner parties here instead of at Venezia because it’s QUIET. We’d be able to hear each other and have a conversation. Even the private dining room at Venezia is loud, and when they have live music – business dinners are a mistake.
When my waitress came over to introduce herself, I asked if they had an Amarone on the winelist. She didn’t know. I asked for the winelist. It did. I ordered a bottle. $105. Only 2x markup from HEB across the street; better than the usual 3x – 4x one finds for a bottle of wine in a restaurant.
As I ordered the bottle of wine … she asked if I was ready to order. Having just sat down, I said, “I’d prefer to get my wine first.”
Another gentleman brought it; decanted at my request, and I spent the next 45 minutes … enjoying my bottle of wine, by myself, awkwardly wondering what happened to my waitress in this EMPTY RESTAURANT. I flagged down a passing service member, whom I would find out was Albanian and didn’t speak any English, but she did find another gentleman, who stopped by my table, so I could ask him to find my waitress for me.
When she came back, my passive aggressive rebuke was, “Everything ok? I missed you!” She said, “Oh, I thought you said that you wanted to be left alone with your wine.” Good grief, that’s not what I said, but at least she was here now.
On my first visit to any restaurant, I’ll ask the server what their best seller is, and what their favorite dish is. I will almost always order one of those two. My waitress said she wasn’t familiar with the menu. I asked her if she’d been waitressing long. She told me two weeks.
I ordered a Caprese salad to buy time to actually look at the menu.
A Caprese salad is sliced tomato under sliced mozarella under some basil leaves, hopefully with some salt and basalmic vinegar. I’m eating one as I type this (not from the Italian Village). She brought me a salad. Lettuce salad, with some tomato and mozzarella, but neither ingredient had ever met Basil, and I think the tomato had threatened to go on strike if anyone put a condiment near it.
An hour and half of a bottle of wine later, I begrudingly munched on my lettuce salad because my waitress wasn’t around for me to ask if they’d made a mistake on a Caprese salad, and some other guy finally stopped in (with my waitress in tow) to make dinner recommendations.
I ordered something that he said; I don’t remember, and it was uninspired. By the time for dessert, the whole bottle of wine was gone. One of the desserts was homemade (Tiramisu?); I will automatically order in-house things like that. It was tasty. $220 for a dinner for 1, and I left confused. And … oddly still hungry.
It’s beautiful inside. Perhaps it’s empty because the service is uninspired. I want to love it. I desperately want this to be my default place. I can’t risk the awkwardness of hosting a dinner party somewhere that could deliver this kind of impression to my customers or colleagues.
I may try it again with my wife in tow, after enough time has passed for the staff to change out and for everyone to forget the memory of the guy reading a book in the corner of an empty restaurant by himself drinking an entire bottle of wine and trying to project “I’m hungry, please feed me” to no one.
*edit to add* I remember my entree – a forgettable medium rare ribeye steak, over some absolutely deliciously cooked potatoes.
Our server was attentive and informed us of the daily dishes not on menu and we ordered fried calamari for the appetizer. The wife ordered a dish that comes with chicken and potatoes. I ordered the daily special which was red fish on a bed of linguini with muscles, shrimp, asparagus and tomatoes.
The fried calamari came out with marinara for dipping and it was without doubt the best calamari we have ever tasted. I thought calamari was supposed to be chewy. Turns out when done right it is tender as it can be. For ten bucks you get a large order with plenty for a party of four.
Next came our meals and they were both beautiful and delicious. The muscles and shrimp in my dish, were like the calamari, tender and cooked to perfection in wine sauce that was perfect. The wife’s chicken was good as well with flavorful roasted potatoes. Our tab was seventy bucks which all things considered was not bad. My red fish plate was nearly forty bucks and I received a large piece of red fish, muscles and shrimp so I felt that was fair.
This place is too fancy for my taste, the food is great but I’m not a fancy guy so I felt out of place. That being said if you like good Italian you gotta give them a shot. I will be back for sure even if I don’t quite fit in.
The waiter was very versed on the food and wine they have. They have a full bar with an outside patio. Plenty of tables. 1st time I’ve ever had flounder stuffed with crab. Nice quite clean place to eat. You will not run low on drink refills the staff is on there toes. They also have steak on the menu. You can tell the homemade difference here. Price is about the same anywhere eles in town But easily better
