What a cool and casual little spot. We stopped in on our way to Cheyenne. I’m sure glad we did. You order your food on one side. The guys running the kitchen side are friendly and pretty generous. We ordered drinks from the bar on the other side. My margarita was better than most and I’m pretty particular about my margs. Best bartender is my husband and he’s generally ruined me for margaritas. So, we waited around for our name to be called (kitchen side) then we took our lunch upstairs to eat. The rooftop area is great. It’s mostly covered. The metal chairs were surprisingly comfortable. We both had the tempura fried fish; my husband had a burrito and I had a bowl. The fish was cooked absolutely beautifully. It was so crisp and the fish was tender and delicious. The salsas were memorably tasty. We got the perfect level of heat with incredible flavor. Their tortilla chips were thick, crunchy and tasty. We didn’t eat them all and would never be so insulting as to toss them. We asked them for a bag and they happily provided one for our late night munchies.
We loved everything about this place, accept for the plastic utensils. I let them know in a friendly and positive way as we left. It was a bit difficult to cut through that big boy burrito with that flimsy fork and knife. But everything else was so delightful, I’m sure we’ll be back.

Honestly very disappointed in this location, I’ve been going to Pete’s for years and always gotten good quality food with kind service. I decided to come in on a Saturday, asking for some Taco Night, they let us know that it’s not ready but should only take a couple minutes. So we decide to wait, letting people go ahead of us. About 5 minutes go by, they let us know it should only take a couple more minutes. Another 5-7 minutes go by, someone visibly asks the kitchen about it, they look around, chuckle and then say it’s going to have to make it. Right in front of us. They don’t update us on that or at least let us know that it’s going to be longer and act like everything is fine. Then we decide that it’s fine, maybe a miscommunication and to just get something else. We TRY to order a breakfast bowl and are informed that they “don’t have that many eggs” after giving the person we let ahead of us a monster portion. At that point we got the message, intended or not, and left.
Honestly I’m extremely disappointed, enough to make a review, and this makes me not really want to go back. I won’t rate the food or atmosphere because we literally couldn’t eat here.

If Qdoba or Chipotle were owned by real people who cared about their employees AND their customers, this is what you would get. Their chili is great, their tacos and burritos are outstanding. Quick service, great atmosphere, and the employees always seem happy to be there. Nobody in the building ever has that “dead behind the eyes” look that you get at some places. It’s a happy place to eat.
Did I mention you’re getting out of here for cheaper than the big “build your own” mexican chains too? They kill it on all accounts.

Waited for my third time having this just for consistency sake. Burritos are perfect ratios of fillings. Not once been underfilled. Delicious, consistent, and great value.

illegal Pete’s has some of the best Mexican food, I’ve ever had. Their taquitos are my favorite, along with the queso & guacamole. The tortillas, & basically everything they serve, is made from scratch, in house! I love the laid back atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable. If you’re a laid back kind of person, looking for great food, with great people running the place; this is your kind of place! Love the staff! They are always so nice & friendly!
*They have handicap parking, right up front & handicap accessible restrooms & tables.
We never miss a chance to go to illegal Pete’s, when we go to Estes Park.
Ft. Collins is a short drive, & definitely worth it!

Update October 21. Met friends for lunch. Dee-licious! I had the battered fish tacos (3) and a side of brown rice with pinto beans (see my pics). My wife had the same. Our friends went with burritos (HUGE burritos). On tap was a brew called Juicy Hazey IPA. Served up ice cold and what a great tasting draft. Pete’s seemed to fully staffed and our food was served up fast and friendly. BTW, what’s with the crazy loud music? What’s that about? Hard to engage your friends in conversation. This place is a big brick box with terrible acoustics. Customers come to enjoy good Mexican style food, great craft beers, and CONVERSATION. Turn it down, please.
First time here. Will go again – and again. Large and roomy, loud and a fun experience. Staff was great. Beers are cold and the variety is good. The Mexican style food is good but not great, especially if you’re accustomed to traditional authentic mex. But this is, in my opinion, a brew pub first and a Mexican grill second. A good combination and a good business concept. Prices are reasonable. Portions are large.

This is a great location in old downtown Fort Collins. It is a Tex-mex order at the counter place with a full bar. They did a good job with the atmosphere. I ordered the Big Fish Burrito. It is large. Three deep fried fish pieces in a custom burrito. I added lime white rice, black beans, tomatillo salsa, and cheese. The food was fresh with good flavors. The staff was friendly.

I very much enjoyed the nachos that we ordered. Perfectly spiced. I do like the way you get to choose what to put on them and that the chips are on the side no more soggy nachos that way…I wish more places would copy that. The people working there were very friendly the rooftop is fabulous

Decent Mexican food for the area. I would recommend the shredded beef over all other proteins and the queso dip over everything else. They do mix the burrito ingredients together, which makes each bite a good one. It does have a very cool atmosphere as it is a hybrid fast-casual dining and full bar.
