Ichiran Ramen: The Ultimate Solo Dining Spot in Tokyo
Reviews
However, during my most recent visit, the taste felt slightly different. The broth seemed a bit heavier and slightly overwhelming compared to how I remembered it. It was still good, but not as impressive as before.
Perhaps after exploring and tasting many other exceptional ramen spots across Japan, my expectations have evolved. With so many outstanding ramen options available, Ichiran now feels more like a nostalgic classic rather than a standout favorite.
Still worth trying, especially for first-time visitors but personal taste can change as your culinary journey grows.
The line at 4ish pm in Shibuya was long, but the wait wasn’t. Stairwells leading into Ichiran are a bit narrow, and you will be within very close proximity to others. Just a warning for those that may be somewhat claustrophobic. I waited no more than 25 mins to finally get inside.
Once you’re in, you’re greeted by a very efficient host that quickly organizes those that are waiting to be seated. You order at the touchscreen kiosk, pay, and are given a ticket or 2 (depending on how many items you order), then wait for the host to have you seated. What’s pretty neat is that within the waiting hallway, there’s a screen that shows you which tables are available, preoccupied, and/or currently being cleaned/set up for the next patron. It’s a small touch, but much appreciated.
Once you’re seated, you’re given the option of modifying your bowl of ramen. I got the tonkotsu ramen, and basically had it set up to the recommended settings. I also got an extra egg, extra pork, and extra serving of noodles.
Now the food; delicious. Absolutely delicious. Idc if people call this place touristy – it’s delicious, period. The broth was rich without being too oily. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The pork was just the right amount of salty and tender, and the noodles were cooked to the exact consistency/texture that i wanted. Perfect.
Between my waiting period and eating in my booth, i hadn’t even spent an hour. The ramen was so good that i literally inhaled it.
The seats were also perfectly partitioned, and everyone – tourist or not – respected the culture of being quiet and just enjoying your ramen solo. Ichiran is an introverts ideal dining establishment, and i love it.
Dont be deterred by the fact that Ichiran is a chain. I promise you that you’ll enjoy your meal here.
But honestly, this was the best ramen we had in Japan.
From the moment the bowl arrived, everything just felt right. The tonkotsu broth was incredibly rich yet never heavy or cloying. It was smooth, deeply flavorful, and comforting in a way that made you want to keep sipping without feeling overwhelmed. It’s the kind of broth you could enjoy again and again without getting sick of it.
The noodles were cooked exactly how we wanted them — firm, springy, and able to hold onto the broth perfectly. The toppings were simple and minimal, with no unnecessary extras or distractions. Nothing fancy, just ramen done really well.
The dining experience adds a lot to the appeal too. Sitting alone in the individual booth, with no noise and no pressure, you’re able to fully focus on the bowl in front of you. It might sound gimmicky at first, but once you’re actually there, it makes complete sense.
Is it fancy? No.
Is it creative or experimental? Also no.
But is it consistent, comforting, and incredibly satisfying? Absolutely.
Sometimes you don’t need something mind-blowing. You just need a bowl that delivers every single time — and for us, Ichiran did exactly that.
We waited for more than 2 hrs to be seated, but the good thing was, since it’s an online queue you don’t have to wait outside the store the whole time. You’ll just receive a notification if it’s your turn.
The food was definitely worth the wait and the price. The broth was well-seasoned, rich but light, and very flavorful. The noodles were also perfectly firm. The chasu pork was tender. It’s an explosion of wonderful flavors.
Overall, it’s an experience worth the 2hr queue.
The waiting time was quite long, but you can register in the online queue on-site, so you don’t have to physically stand in line – just stay nearby and track your turn on your phone (we waited about an hour).
You order via a vending machine (contactless payment available), then fill out a customization form. Seating is individual and separated, and the ramen is served very quickly. Extremely aromatic broth, great noodles and toppings, and a perfectly cooked egg. Friendly staff, though interaction is minimal. Highly recommended!
At this location, we waited about 60 minutes, but it wasn’t a problem since they give you a number and you can shop or explore while waiting. When it’s your turn, you order from a vending machine, and once seated, the ramen arrives within 10 minutes – super quick and efficient. I also loved the individual booths, which are perfect for solo travelers or anyone wanting a bit of privacy while enjoying their meal.
It’s family-friendly for older kids who love ramen, and a must-try dining experience when in Tokyo. Highly recommended!
