Hutong is an authentic Chinese food bistro. ‘Hutong’ means a type of narrow street or alley commonly found in a historical neighborhoods in northern Chinese cities. The Capital area and surrounding neighborhoods inspired us to create the theme of Hutong in the restaurant. Tucked away gem! If you are living or visiting Madison visit this place! Great food! I come here every time I am in town. Specials are highly suggested trust this chef! Small plates egg rolls and dumplings you want to have! Had the sweet sliced beef rice so good! Soups are so yummy!

A friend recommended this and we decided to try it spur of the moment – and what an excellent decision. Everyone was so kind and nice. The cocktails were delicious- a bit strong but that’s a good thing! We started with pot stickers which were surprisingly crispy and full of flavor. I had the Dan Dan Noodles which I was told were were spicy – which they were! But in a good way. By the bottom of the bowl I was craving the spice. My husband got the Braised Pork rice which was amazing as well. I really appreciate the kindness and service here. I cannot wait to return!

Authentic Chinese restaurant. Serves as its ready (dim sum style I believe the waitresses said). They were out of the pork fried rice, which was disappointing not to be able to try but everything else was pretty good. There was a beef broth that I had which was yummy and very healthy. My friend had the garlic green beans and she said they were best she ever had. I thought yummy too and I’m not a big green bean fan. I’d love to go back and try the rice next

“Hutong” means an alleyway. This restaurant really isn’t in an alleyway but the idea is to signify a small restaurant that you’d by happenstance. The outside is very nondescript but it is popping inside. Full tables with conversations in the air. The menu is small which is great. I find the giant Chinese menus to cause me paralysis by analysis. If you like spicy, get the DAN DAN noodles. The spicy beef noodle soup is also very good, and so is the garlic green beans. A glass of jasmine tea rounds out the meal. $60 with tips.

Very tasty food and a warm, cozy atmosphere. We shared the tofu skin salad, fried seafood dumplings, and lamb noodle soup (without the lamb shank). The soup was so good I forgot to take a picture. Highly recommend!

Very pleasant service and delicious Chinese cuisine! Broth in the beef noodle soup was flavorful. The Fuzhu salad may look simple, but it was packed with flavor! Their Bingfen (ice jelly) is cooling and delicious too. Definitely will be coming here again! Note: they no longer sell lamb skewers.

I got the beef noodle soup, the chicken skewer special, and the scallion pancakes. Objectively food was pretty good, 7/10 for the skewers, 7.5/10 for the scallion pancake, and 7.8/10 for the beef noodle soup.
But the dish didn’t taste authentic to me. The beef noodle soup tasted more like a tonkotsu ramen than a beef noodle soup. Even the color of the broth resembles it more. I came in expecting to get chinese beef noodle soup, so I was very disappointed. I wish the restaurant had hoisin sauce for the scallion pancakes as well.

Had a dinner for two. We thoroughly enjoyed the panko shrimp and squid (calamari). The garlic green beans were out of this world delicious. The spicy beef broth could’ve been spicier but was still good. The hot tea (peach oolong) was delightful. We finished with a unique and refreshing coconut dessert (pictured)!

Was I pranked? I am seeing the word “authentic” in the other reviews and I am perplexed. Nothing about my experience was authentic. I am 90% sure the dan dan noodles used Buldak instant ramen hot sauce, and 95% sure the chicken was tossed in ketchup. 夫妻肺片 was totally off the mark. Just because it’s not the “orange chicken experience” doesn’t make it authentic. I would say the food is improvising with Sichuanese concepts but not good. The cooking has some major growing edges, but these reviews are an insult to Chinese cuisine.
