When I initially discovered it, the food was superb!
About 6 months ago, I stopped eating there often because the cooks have changed and the food isn’t as delightful.
Today (12-19-2025) I went there to eat, after months of not going there. I ordered curry chicken, rice & peas, plantains and cabbage.
I was eating it and the flavors have improved since the original chef left. However, a piece of chicken wasn’t fully cooked.
I was shocked and disturbed, to see that mess on my plate. I took it back to the restaurant and asked for a manager.
A older Black man came, saw the half-cooked chicken, never apologized or offered a cake or something and left to bring me more chicken.
When I tell you I will NEVER recommend Hungry Joe’s to anyone (like I used to), I mean it.
This place has fallen from top-tier to MID.
It’s funny how they are extremely rude in spirit and practice, yet when the customer’s energy matches theirs, the customer is somehow the problem.
This spot was recommended by a friend so I really wanted to love it. I’m not in the area often, but work had me there for a week so I was trying tons of food and I would put this somewhere in the middle.
Parking: If you get there during a busy time, you may find it difficult to find parking. People tried to use the parking lot as efficiently as possible, but you may find yourself street side and walking up.
My order: Oxtail plate, short rib plate, jerk chicken with fries and a beef and cheese patty for the drive home.
With the few Jamaican restaurants I’ve tried some dishes, I was expecting the flavor to be out of this world. Especially with a friends commendation and the amount of high reviews, I was already setting some high expectations.
Unfortunately, while it all smelled amazing and was cooked to a perfect tenderness, it seemed like what was common between all the dishes was they were a bit under-seasoned. The rice and beans were solid, tasty vegetables and plantains, but when it came to the meats, it was perfectly cooked… just needed more seasoning.
The jerk chicken was saved by the sauce! Had some kick to it but nothing you can’t handle if you normally add some spice to your food.
The highlight was hands down the patty I had. I wish I had ordered more for my wife and friends to try, but with a 2 hr drive in traffic and the shop being sold out and having to make more, I took the last one they had to go for the drive. It was flaky and the patty was super flavorful. On my drive home, I was thinking “man if this is what the patty is like, the other food is gonna hit like crazy!”.
Benefit of a doubt: So while my experience wasn’t the best with the food, you could definitely do worse in the area. I want to go back to try a mini of my orders and get some patties, as well as try the desserts they have behind the glass.
I would recommend placing an order ahead of time, but be sure to place it maybe more than an hour out. Due to how busy the place got and them being short-staffed, I still had to wait an extra 30 minutes.
It can be a bit pricey, but what isn’t these days. And while a bad first experience with food is enough to push people away and leave a negative review, the service I had was nice enough that maybe I just came on a bad day.
The miss whom was at the register had explained the situation to everyone to set expectations and was handling a crowded line as good as she could. Checking out, she took her time to make sure my order was mine, offering me condiments, utensils and double bagged my order so it wouldn’t fall through. For me, that stuff goes a long way.
Wife loved how tender all the food was, and her pick was the short ribs.
A friend also said it was his pick of the dishes. Against popular opinion, they liked that over the oxtail because it’s generally less fatty.
For me, if not the patty, then I’ll go with the jerk wings. It’s what I came for and the sauce saved it. Just sub the fries with their vegetables and/or rice and beans, and you’re good.
Will definitely try again when I get assigned in the area again!
I’ve been craving oxtails for a few days now. So, I placed an order for a large oxtail platter with dumplings and festival. The oxtails and the rice and peas were BURNT.
I didn’t come str8 home. I stopped at the little store next door. Had a conversation with the store clerk. I grabbed a few items. On my way home I stopped to grab other goodies for the weekend.
I finally get home. Get a glass of ice, utensils, napkins, I’m ready. I pour my Ginger Beer, take a sip. I go in for my 1st bite, I felt a gut punch; BURNT FOOD!
I call and their closed for the evening. $45 down the freakin drain….
UPDATE: After being told by Juan to bring the plate in and they would exchange it. While me and my cousin were looking at the menu to order addt’l food, The manager came from the back and stated they wouldn’t exchange the food, but will refund my money. They withheld $9 for whatever reason which I’ll be disputing with my bank. I don’t know if the guy that came from the back peeping was the manager or owner either way it was very unprofessional. They lost out of additional money for being rude and unprofessional.
Recommend the jerk chicken, cabbage, Mac n cheese, plantains, and rice.
Wish it were a little spicier
The wait is LONG, if you’re doing pick up, make sure to put the pick up time 45 minutes before you arrive.
The staff’s attitude wasn’t very friendly.
The food was much more disappointing compared to the good reviews I had read. I ordered two dishes, Brown Stew Chicken and Jerk Chicken, but they gave me two portions that tasted exactly the same, likely due to a mix-up. Both chicken dishes seemed like boiled chicken with sauce poured on top.
What’s dangerous is that the sauce contained a lot of small chicken bone fragments, and if you’re not careful, you could choke on them.
The only positive point is that the portions were quite large.
Also, be careful when they calculate your bill. I ordered two small portions, but they charged me for one large portion while I wasn’t paying attention. I noticed it later but decided to let it go to avoid an argument.
I’ve tried on seperate occassionas to order the salmon and shrimp to no avail. I always end up with the chicken. Takes 30 minutes for shrimp curry so I guess order ahead if you want that?
Staff lumbers about. They dont get excited about anything.
comes with the plate, I can’t tell what they put it in but it’s sort of sweet and it’s really good. The cabbage was seasoned well too. You get really large portions which justifies the cost. Overall, I was pleased and would come here again.
I ordered ahead for pickup to avoid the notoriously long line. There was no option online to request extra gravy, so I asked in person. I was then told that a small condiment container of gravy costs $1.75 online, while the same item costs $0.75 in-store, which feels like an excessive and unfair markup.
Because of that, I asked if I could substitute three sauces instead. The staff member I interacted with was dismissive and unaccommodating, and attempted to charge me again even though my order was already over $70.
When I asked to cancel the order due to the situation, they agreed — but I was still charged anyway.
This isn’t an isolated issue. On a previous visit, I was told it was “too late” to add gravy and ended up waiting an extra 15 minutes for my food after ordering.
The food itself is good, but between the inconsistent pricing, poor communication, and lack of customer care, it’s hard to justify the hassle. Better transparency and basic customer service would make a big difference.
