Classic country diner with hidden gems throughout the menu.
I have been here twice in the past several months. I wanted to have both lunch and breakfast before reviewing. Overall, I would say breakfast is better and a little more worth the trip.
I write this review with a heavy heart because this is one of my favorite kind of restaurants. Family style tables, southern diner food, sweet tea on the side you get yourself, the works and everyone is so nice! While there are some delicious food items on the menu that I will get to in a second, the majority of the food lacked taste or was off in one way or another. Truthfully, while I enjoy the restaurant atmosphere, I would have given the food two stars if I averaged out everything I had.
Let’s start with the hidden gems though.. the cinnamon role – to die for. When they grabbed it out of a basket and it was already shrink wrapped I was really worried. Wow was I wrong, they hold up well. I would go back just to grab one to go while I am passing! Secondly, the sweet potato casserole was on par with Ruth’s Chris. So sweet and delicious. Please get this if you like sweet potatoes.
As far as the remaining items go, my pulled pork sandwich was really dry. Maybe it was the no sauce when served but overall, no amount of sauce I added could really help. I paired it with the Mac and cheese and the pasta was way overcooked and lacked any salt or taste. During breakfast the side eggs were dry/overcooked and my omelet was similar. I remember there being a ton of onions as well. Maybe it’s just the style of omelet but I like a fluffy exterior with everything mixed in and melted in the middle. It seemed like they overcooked some eggs on the griddle and then at the last second added some warmed up meats and vegetables. I wanted to like the pancakes so bad but they tasted like a sugar cookie. Adding any syrup was not an option. Again, maybe just the style I am not used to.
While there are negatives, there is so much potential to this place. I will be back to find other hidden gems and I would recommend other people to visit as well and make your own opinion because this has been voted a top spot in TR on a few forums.

This was my first time here. I absolutely loved it
The staff was awesome. Friendly and respectful. They made sure that we were happy and asked if our food was to satisfactory. It was awesome.

Came for lunch on a Friday, was immediately made to feel at home. Food was incredible, got the pulled pork bbq with fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, and cowboy caviar. Several very nice folks checked on me often making sure I was satisfied. An absolute hidden gem in between travelers rest and Tigerville.

I eyed this place driving to hiking one trip…2nd trip I made the family stop. Breakfast portions/prices and sides were generous and enough. Great biscuits and I love some biscuits. Hope yo come back for lunch sometime to sample because everything looks extensive and amazing

This is about as traditional as any Southern diner gets with Comfort food served at breakfast and lunch. It’s a piece of Americana and when you walk through the door, it’s like walking into a happy place that existed 100 years ago. I’ve been there for both breakfast and lunch nowand it’s wonderfully placed and well attended due to its great spot along route 290.

So myself and my daughter decided to get breakfast.. She’s learning to drive.. It’s fairly close to our house so we tried it out.. The restaurant was very clean inside Jerry was very helpful and very hospitable. She explained the whole menu and recommended both the breakfast and lunch items. We were very impressed. Homemade corn beef hash(What a great idea!!!) Grits were the best I’ve eaten.ever.. My daughter had Eggs Benedict. Her gravy was delicious with the biscuits.. My family always say we fine the best hope in the wall places Well this is it!!!! Glad we went and it’ll be our Breakfast nook. Thanks. We made it safely home. My daughter has a lot of learning but at least she and I found a Awesome restaurant!!!!

I have to start out by saying this place brings you back to your southern roots from the moment you walk in the door. Such a cool spot with local artists painting on the wall and some really old and neat decor. I have had their breakfast here several times and their Driver omelette is amazing. Today we went for lunch and heard that they are famous for their tomato pie. After trying it, I can definitely see why!!! It is a quiche baked into a flakey pie crust (like chicken pot pie) with sliced oven roasted homegrown tomatoes seasoned to perfection. This is the best thing I have ordered from here by far. I had Mac and cheese which was ok but their collared greens and sweet potato casserole were great! The servers are great with fast southern style service that makes you feel like you are part of the family. If you are wanting a great breakfast or lunch with amazing food and people, The Hungry Drover is the place to be! Make sure before you leave, you buy a homemade cinnamon roll that is so sweet and fresh and the size of a dinner plate. Highly recommend

Our experience with the restaurant was so so. Although we don’t live too far, when we walked in it felt very much like a locals spot like when you go into a place and everyone knows everyone and you’re the odd ball out being looked at entering. Can’t explain it, but that’s the feeling.
The set up is you order from a register at the front and get a number. There are tables to choose from to sit at. Some of which, you are sitting with other guests that aren’t part of your party. There’s an area to get coffee and fountain drinks off to the right side.
I ordered an omelette with ham, cheddar, and jalapeños. I got the sourdough bread dry and the breakfast potatoes. My husband got the Greek omelette, wheat toast dry, and he also got the breakfast potatoes.
My omelette wasn’t fully cooked inside which was interesting, because it was a long, skinny omelette. I couldn’t eat more than one bite. I also couldn’t taste the cheddar. The jalapeños were on and poppin’ though! My toast was good and the potatoes were crunchy at the time and tasty. I ended up taking mine home to cook it more and add cheese. The potatoes did not age well over the few hours. They were not longer crunchy on the outside. More like mush.
My husband said his was fine, but the oddest thing was the olive part of the omelette was literally whole olives. I have never seen that before. He didn’t end up eating them.

My Grandaughter and I finally got out to the Hungry Drover. She was happy with her pancakes and sausage and i was in heaven with my perfectly cooked over easy eggs with house made Corned Beef Hash. It was a pleasure meeting a bunch of smiling faces making you feel at home!
Reagan, Don and there was another young lady that i didnt get her name but you are all AWESOME! Cant wait to come back with the family and try some other dishes.
