The Carolina slaw dog (mustard, chili, and coleslaw) and the Chicago style dog (sauerkraut, mustard, pickle relish) were what we had and they were both out of this world. Super fresh coleslaw, really good chili, and all put together into a fantastic $5 lunch. The fries are also really good.
Restaurant and restroom were immaculate even at peak lunch time and the owner is clearly a really nice person. Really appreciative of his staff and customers.
It’s a good concept, and one that would be popular with both beachgoers and late-night bar hoppers. But their so-called famous chili, is nothing more than finely ground cooked “meat”. No spice, no color, no discernible flavor. In fact I think it was the worst chili I ever ate. They would do better using canned Hormel chili.
They do serve Parks hot dogs, which are pretty good. And they do use good rolls that they toast. But their toppings leave much to be desired.
We also tried their baked beans, which were nothing more than poured out of a can and warmed up. Again, no flavor, no taste, bland and blech. We had to ask for ketchup and mustard to mix into the beans to make them palatable . Also tried the mac and cheese, which was so dry it tasted as if had been made three days before and left to sit out. Then they must have microwaved it and the oil separated: it had a half inch of yellow oil in the bottom of my cup. Double blech!
I ordered a Carolina dog , which tasted nothing like those I remember from four years living in North Carolina. The slaw was flavorless and the onions must have been smashed to Smithereens in a Cuisinart because they just blended in with the slaw. I like onions on my hot dogs because I like to taste them and have the sweet crunch of onion pieces. No crunch in these onions, just a wet mush of finely shredded particles of onions. Onion mush on top of slaw mush on top of meat mush.
The Times Square hot dog had sauerkraut that also, again tasted bland and right out of the can. No seasoning , no nothing.
The woman next to me ordered a South of the Border hot dog, which was completely obliterated by cold shredded cheese. She said she didn’t like it at all, and it bore no resemblance to anything South of the Border. In fact she scraped half of the cold shredded cheese off because she said it tasted like it had come from Walmart.
I didn’t hate this place and could have given only one star, because I want to like it, and I want a good place for good hot dogs here at the beach. The hotdogs themselves, solo, are good and the toasted rolls are the best thing about the place.
Oh yes, I wanted to have some lemonade and iced tea, but the tank was filled up but not running. Who knows how long it had been sitting there like that?
I know the place is new, but their printed menu is riddled with typos. Ever heard of spell check?
My observation sitting there at the counter, was that they need experienced management that is aware of the potential shortfalls and who has the ability to catch and rectify them. The two young men cooking the hot dogs were trying their best, but needed direction.
Hot dog Johnny, sorry to give you a harsh dose of reality, but get your buns busy, get decent management who can train and oversee the hard-working kids who are struggling to do their best. and rethink some of your recipes.
