I was part of a small group eating at Hortus last evening, as the sun set over SMA. Few people were in the jardín and the streets and it was an atypical quiet evening there. Looking up at the parroquia and listening to the bells was a lovely backdrop to my reunion with friends. I enjoyed an Aperol Spritz which was tasty, and ordered Spaghetti Carbonara, which had a smaller noodle, which I liked, and a delicious cream sauce, with a small amount of bacon. I felt the cost was high, but realized I was paying for the location. The service was amazing and quite professional and friendly. It’s a very convenient spot to rest and take a bite, while in the very center of the city. I look forward to trying their coffee and pastries some morning.

My friends and I enjoyed a terrific evening at Hortus. The food was exquisitely prepared and elegantly served. The waitstaff was friendly, attentive, courteous, professional. We were going to sit inside in the attractive dining room, but the weather was so pleasant and Hortus’s location, overlooking the Jardín and the Parroquia, so enchanting that we opted for a table on the patio. A magical evening in un pueblo mágico. I’ll be back!

Hortus is ideally located right across from the striking Parroquia de Allende, at the heart of Plaza de la Paz. The prime location makes it an excellent stop during a day exploring San Miguel—just steps away from the city’s main attractions and atmosphere.
The restaurant itself is on the smaller side inside, but the outdoor terrace adds a pleasant bonus, seating about a dozen tables with a view of the bustling plaza. Despite the high-traffic surroundings, the environment remains clean and surprisingly quiet, allowing for a relaxed break even when crowds fill the nearby square.
The staff are courteous and attentive, which adds to the overall positive experience. In terms of food, the menu leans toward light, snack-style options; on our visit, both the hummus and shrimp dish were average—not bad, but not especially memorable either. Many come for the drinks, especially cocktails like their “Old Cuban,” which is popular among regulars.
If you’re looking for a nice, quiet spot to rest and recharge with decent, straightforward food in the very center of town, Hortus fits the bill. While you might not be blown away by every dish, the location and relaxing atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop after a long day of wandering through San Miguel de Allende.

After visiting Hortus, I realized my experience was quite different from others.. I can only imaged how busy they must get because of their location and proximity to San Miguel’s most famous landmark, La Parroquia. The church sits in front of El Jardin, a Central Park and meeting place for most. I arrived at Hortus before 9am. They are maybe 200 feet from La Parroquia. The restaurant service early in the morning was quite enjoyable. Freshly baked breads, breakfast, tartines and sweets are delicious and their coffee is quite good. Seating was in abundance. I sat inside at the counter and enjoyed everything that I forgot to take pictures of what I ate. Please give them a try.

The food was not that great for what you pay. We ordered avo toast and got two fried eggs and a miniature serving of bread and sliced avocado. See the photos for yourselves. The best thing about the place is that you can have a decent coffee and see the magnificent cathedral at the same time…

The roasted baby corn appetizer was the yummiest thing I ate all week exploring the city! Super nice staff. Peaceful place. I wish I hadn’t waited until my last night in SM to try it.

Imagine telling someone they can’t sit at your establishment even though you just bought hot drinks from them.

God forbid you have some coffee and hot chocolate at their outdoor table at 9pm when there’s literally NO ONE ELSE is there.

I guess the waiters are happy to stand around doing nothing but guarding empty tables.

The hot chocolate sucks as well.

All portions, including drinks, bakery and breakfast are stingy small. Please do something about the pigeons flying on top of customer in outdoor tables. Feathers falling on meals is not hygienic
