Reviews
Our main courses were Wiener Schnitzel with German potato salad and marinated cucs, Bavarian Goulash with red cabbage, and Sauerbraten with red cabbage and bread dumpling. All three entrees were wundervoll as is said auf Deutsch!!! Most enjoyable and tasty in English.
We capped off our experience with three orders of home-made apple strudel which was filled with apples but surprisingly not many raisins? It was a little pricey at $10 a serving, but…
Speaking of prices, they were reasonable for the quality and portion size of everything else.
Ambiance was like an old shoe, comfortable and laid back. The Thursday night that we visited the clientele was mostly older (possibly locals) with a few families present and a few birthdays to celebrate.
Our service was first rate, and the whole crew seemed to operate as a well oiled machine. While we had to wait a few times for plates to be cleared, the check to be presented, and then processed, it was clear that the waitress for our area was getting drinks, serving hot food etc. for other tables during that time. So we didn’t mind, especially after she acknowledged the delay and apologized for it.
In closing, based on other reviews and my observations, I strongly recommend making a reservation even in the “off” season just to be on the safe side. Now that we know how good the Horst Gasthaus is, we will definitely be back again this February and Februaries in the future!!!
Went here on Thursday February 12th 2026 with my parents, aunt, uncle and a few friends as a total party of 7. We did make a reservation online and highly recommend to do that. When we arrived, the parking lot was jam packed and we almost couldn’t find a spot. However, we were luckily able to park in the back somewhere. This place is like a little house with german memoria on it. in the dining room, they also had an accordion player. When we walked in to the door, we waited about 6 -10 minutes for a host to greet us. When the host finally did, she sat us down right away. Then, we sit down and our server still didn’t greet us until like 15 minutes or later. Now, i understand that they were busy- but acknowledge us, address us, take a moment to start us with waters. Although this gave us time to look over the menu if we didn’t know what we wanted. Finally the waitress comes over and gets us 7 waters, and 6 beers. We also put in an order of Bratwurst, Bauernwurst, as well as the pretzel appetizer. Appetizers came out in a timely manner. I enjoyed the Bauernwurst, which i think is the one that tasted like hot dogs, as well as the pretzel. The pretzel was big and we did end up sharing it with the whole table. For Entrees, I ordered the chicken Jager with mushrooms and gravy with a side of german potato salad and string beans. The String beans were the vegetable of the day. Oh, and the waitress did a good job with telling us the specials and communicating once everything calmed down. Food seemed to take long to come out, but when it finally did, I enjoyed my Chicken Jager. Only issue is that some others in my party said that their sides/food was cold- even after warming it up a bit- which the waitress did try to fix at least. Maybe the heat lamp is broken, or the food isn’t directly under it, I don’t know but this should be improved upon. We were offered dessert but skipped it. We did separate checks for our party- which the waitress accomodated. Paid via credit card and left a cash tip. May be back again!
Once seated, we waited approximately five minutes before a waitress rushed by and said she would be right back. After another delay, we ordered water, which took nearly ten minutes to arrive. When it did, it was dropped on the table with enough force that it spilled, and the waitress continued walking without acknowledgment.
When she finally took our order, we were told that the appetizers we wanted where sold out. That was two of the four appetizers on the menu were unavailable. The response to this was very aloof, with an attitude that suggested inconvenience rather than apology. Most surprising was that the waitress then sat down at our table, which felt extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable.
At that point, we decided to leave, as it was clear the experience was not improving. The restaurant was not busy—only a few tables were occupied. Before leaving, we spoke with the manager, a tall blonde woman, who showed little concern and simply asked for the waitress’s name (I believe it was Caitlin). There was no apology or acknowledgment of the situation.
This was especially disappointing because we have been here before and previously enjoyed both the food and friendly service. Unfortunately, this visit fell far short of that standard. We hope management takes this feedback seriously, as the food may be good, but the service and professionalism need significant improvement.
We are on the search for German restraunts in SC.
Horst Gasthaus did not disappoint
Schnitzel was delicious.
Brats were good too.
Spätzle was oh so good…
We were there at 4 pm off season… it was cold and windy… it still had places to sit, but… im certain it would be standing room only….
In other words… I’d get a reservation
