My son’s teacher is from Texas and is always raving about the BBQ there. I had to show her how we get down in the Carolinas. LOL. She absolutely loved it! Honky Tonk got her stamp of approval.
I got her the brisket sandwich and baked beans, and when I tell you that was the toughest ride to the school I’ve ever had! I kept trying to decide if I was going to pull over and eat it. I mean, how would she know? She didn’t even know I was bringing it.
Anyway, I decided to just give it to her—teachers work hard, right? The prices were very reasonable. The staff was personable and very friendly, and the atmosphere was nice and calm.
I will be back!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “A Hell of a Deal” – Honky Tonk Barbecue

I’ve tried a lot of barbecue, and Honky Tonk Barbecue stands out—this spot is a gem. I recently visited and was genuinely impressed. Everything I ordered was cooked to perfection. The brisket in particular was tender, smoky, and flavorful—exactly what you’d hope for.

They smoke their meats with wood fire right on site, and you can taste it in every bite. I asked about it and confirmed: this is real-deal barbecue, not shortcut stuff.

The service was friendly and impeccable, and the staff clearly takes pride in what they do. Prices were very reasonable—my dad even called it “a hell of a deal,” and I agree. You can definitely eat your fill here without breaking the bank.

If you haven’t checked out this Honky Tonk yet, you’re missing out. Watch the video, see the food, and go give it a spin.

While visiting Winston-Salem from Texas, my son and I were eager to try some authentic Carolina BBQ. The front desk manager at or hotel highly recommended Honky Tonk Smokehouse, even giving us a coupon—and we’re so glad she did. She was absolutely right. As Texans, we hold BBQ to a high standard, and this spot held its own. We stopped in on a Tuesday evening and were impressed from start to finish.
I ordered a platter that included:
• 5 smoked chicken wings – These were the standout of the night. Crispy, perfectly seasoned, and expertly smoked. Probably the best meat we tried overall.
• 3-cheese macaroni and cheese – Creamy, flavorful, and lived up to the “famous” label.
• Fried okra – Cooked just right with no sliminess, and still steaming hot when served. Both sides were well seasoned and comforting.

My son chose the Split Decision Platter, selecting:
• Jalapeño cheese sausage – A special that night, and packed with melty cheese. The casing had a satisfying snap and wasn’t greasy at all.
• Brisket (lean cut) – Nicely smoked with a solid bark and smoke ring. While he wished he’d asked for “wet,” the flavor and texture were still excellent. The seasoning was balanced—not overly salty or peppery, and you could see a good smoke ring. His sides were the mac & cheese and green beans, both fresh and flavorful. We also took advantage of a coupon for two free baby back ribs. They were meaty, tender, and cleanly pulled from the bone—an unmistakable sign of perfectly cooked ribs. The rub was on point, and there wasn’t a single fatty bite. Sauces: Honky Tonk has a self-serve sauce bar with a wide range of options:
• Original
• Spicy
• Honey Chipotle
• Jalapeño
• Brown Sugar
• Sweet Apple
• Eastern Dip (vinegar-based)
• Alabama White

We tried them all. I especially liked the Alabama White on chicken, and the Brown Sugar and Eastern Dip on pork. It was great to have the freedom to mix and match. Desserts: They offer banana pudding, Oreo chocolate pudding, and cobblers (apple, peach, cherry). We didn’t have room this time, but everything is scratch-made in-house and looked tempting. Service & Atmosphere: The staff were outstanding—friendly, patient, and genuinely interested in where we were from and what we thought of the food. As BBQ “novices” to the Carolina style, we appreciated the guidance.

The restaurant is in a strip center with plenty of parking. Inside, the dining area was spotless, with about 15–20 tables (a mix of bar-height and standard). Food is served in paper boats and plates, which gave the whole experience a laid-back, backyard BBQ feel—very fitting.

Final Thoughts: According to their brochure, everything is slow-smoked and hand-rubbed with their own seasoning blends. You can taste that care in every bite. With a massive selection of sides (20+ options), generous platters, scratch-made desserts, and outstanding service, Honky Tonk Smokehouse is absolutely a must-visit for anyone looking for real Carolina BBQ—even for us proud Texans.

I’ll be back next time I’m in town!

Very good food. I got wings and they were fantastic. So good I had to try something else. So I got a chopped chicken sandwich. It was great as well. My daughter is Gluten free and this place came up with a search. They were very specific in what she could have. Great food and great people. 100% recommend this place. I’ll be back.

It is nicely decorated.
The food…the food tastes like its made by someone who hates BBQ.
Brisket was dry and flavorless, while looking like pastrami.
Pulled pork was like “your” sister-in-laws dust dry turkey from last Thanksgiving.
The jalapeño beans…tasted like canned beans boiled with added sugar. Cooked in a pot next to a picture of a jalapeño. Sweet with no other flavor.
All around disappointing.

The annoying fly got the first bite. Took 10 minutes for the food to come out but everything was lukewarm. Brisket was dry, macaroni was separated from the cheese, and who makes greens sweet? I refused to take another bite my husband ate the dry brisket for me but that’s it.

Recently used Honky Tonk to help cater a portion of a Thanksgiving lunch for a local public school, and it was excellent! (We ordered the turkey, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole.) They had the food ready on time to be picked up, and had it packaged really well (no spilling of anything during the drive back!). They were also kind enough to give us an additional discount for the school so we could stay in budget. The staff all loved the food!! Hoping we get to use them again next year for the same event.

Not a huge barbecue fan most times, but they know how to throw down in the kitchen! The servings are pretty nice for what you pay, and the quality is that good ole southern bbq and sides. I LOVE when places have a sauce bar, and there were many bbq flavors to choose from. Would recommend, and would return.

I ordered the split decision with wings and brisket, barbecue beans and Mac n cheese. The brisket was dry, the wings were hot and crispy but overcooked. The beans were cold and pretty bland. The Mac n cheese was ok. The variety of sauces were good, you’re gonna need them. The service was good. The atmosphere was meh, it was chilly inside.

Great location with access from both North and Southbound US 421 and North and Southbound Country Club Road by using Jonestown Road. Restaurant is a little hard to find the first time. Employees were all cheerful, courteous, friendly and smiling and helpful by telling about the daily lunch specials that are not on the menu. Order and pay at the front counter and they bring your food to the table. I am partial to the smoked sausage, brisket and chicken.
