What I highly recommend: the Cantonese wonton soup for two. The dumpling wrappers are perfectly thin, and the wonton filling is flavorful and well-seasoned. The yu choy is sautéed simply with fresh sliced garlic — fresh, vibrant, and exactly how it should be. And the water chestnut pudding is THE BEST. It’s such a hard-to-find dim sum item, and honestly one of the main reasons we’re willing to travel this far to eat here.
Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the char siu (chashu). I ordered a pound to go, and when I got home, it turned out to be mostly hardened, fatty, gristly pieces. I ended up throwing most of it away. That was especially frustrating considering my girlfriend and I left a $30 tip on a $100 bill.
To be fair, most Chinese restaurants aren’t known for warm service, but our waiter was friendly and attentive, and he did a good job.
Overall, I’ll return for the specialties they execute well — but I’ll definitely skip the char siu next time.
From the moment I walked in, the customer service set the tone — attentive, welcoming, and efficient without being rushed. In a BBQ house where timing is everything, that kind of flow speaks volumes about the operation.
Now let’s talk about that crispy duck.
As a chef, I pay attention to skin first. The lacquered finish on that duck had that deep mahogany sheen — a clear sign of proper air-drying before roasting. When I bit into it, the skin shattered. Not chewy. Not rubbery. That delicate crackle that only comes from disciplined temperature control and patience.
Underneath? Juicy, tender meat with a subtle five-spice backbone — star anise and clove whispering in the background without overpowering the natural richness of the duck. The fat was rendered beautifully, basting the meat while still allowing the skin to stay crisp. That balance isn’t easy. It’s craftsmanship.
And then the ginger soy.
Simple on paper. But when done right? Transformative.
Fresh ginger heat, sharp and aromatic. Quality soy — savory, rounded, not overly salty. A slight sweetness that smooths everything out. When that sauce hits the duck, it cuts through the richness and wakes up the palate. It doesn’t mask the flavor — it elevates it. That’s when you know the sauce was built with intention.
What impressed me most was the restraint. Nothing was over-seasoned. Nothing was trying too hard. Just confident execution rooted in tradition.
As a chef, I respect technique.
As a foodie, I appreciate flavor.
Hong Kong BBQ delivers both.
If you love real-deal Cantonese-style roast meats done the right way — this spot deserves your attention.
Haven’t dined here in years but came back on the recommendation of a friend. Our dishes were extremely authentic and tasty, and the service was very friendly. Will definitely be back – probably one of my top choices now for Chinese food in South Florida.
