We had the late wave for a volleyball tournament. So we decided to go grab some brunch downtown.
This place had great pictures and reviews so we decided to give it a try. But what drew me in to be honest was the homemade popped heart I’m a sucker for pop tarts so I wanted to see what the homemade version they had tasted like.

My daughter ordered the turkey avocado Benedict and devoured all of it so I’m guessing it was delicious. I did not get one bite and she usually shares.

I had the biscuits and gravy, cheesy grits, and two eggs over easy. The biscuits and gravy were really good. Our server gave them a rating of 8.5 out of 10 and I would say they were probably more of a 7 out of 10. But they were good.

The cherry popped heart was warm and fresh. It took me back to eating frosted pop tarts warmed up in a toaster before school. Although this is more of a chain restaurant and we usually don’t hit those very often. It had a very inviting atmosphere and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

So next time we’re in Kansas City, you might catch us eating a cherry or cinnamon popped heart.

Update to the story two days later I walked six blocks in 10° weather to get some popped parts for the volleyball girls before we played in the gold bracket.

There’s nothing I love more than a cute breakfast spot, and this one definitely hit the spot. I ordered the classic buttermilk pancakes and they were amazing! I also got an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. It wasn’t the best coffee I’ve ever had, but I definitely should’ve gone with the seasonal pumpkin flavor instead. There were four of us, and the booth felt a little tight, but overall I had a great experience and would definitely come back.

I’ve stumbled upon Homegrown Kitchen while in town for a conference. One lunch turned into two.

Let’s talk about the tomato soup. I ordered it both times. This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill soup—it was a creamy, hearty homage to 1950s Americana comfort food, elevated with sharp cheddar and crowned with homemade croutons.

First visit: Traditional Eggs Benedict. The eggs had golden yolks and the silky hollandaise. Second visit: Country Benny—a Midwestern masterpiece. As someone from Europe, let me just say: biscuits are a brilliant gastronomic invention, and whoever thought to pair them with thick, meaty gravy deserves an award.

Outstanding breakfast spot!
The food here was absolutely incredible — huge portions, amazing flavour, and genuinely some of the best breakfast dishes I’ve had in a long time. The whole place has a friendly, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home. Definitely a must-visit in Kansas City!

Overall – good food and vibrant atmosphere. Bc it’s a brunch place and located in KC, can get a little hectic. Their waiting line procedure does seem to be efficient though!

Servers were friendly and service was fast considering the time frame we came at. Food was good and at reasonable prices (forgot to take menu pics). Atmosphere was also cute and bright with all the decor. Only issue is parking situation bc you’d have to do street or parking lot parking to get here.

Can’t remember the exact name but the inlet that comes w avocado on top is what I’d recommend!

I’ve been to Homegrown a few times in Des Moines but this is my first time at one of their Kansas City locations. First, as far as Homegrown goes, it was good. We started with a strawberry poptart which was as sweet as it looks though I do wish they were served warm. For drinks, we ordered a Pumpkin Pie Latte and the Real Deal Mocha. The Mocha was pretty standard but the Latte was delicious; not too sweet. For entrees, we ordered the Country Benny and Let’s Make A Toast (with the pumpkin bread French toast). Between both entrees; the sausage wasn’t a favorite. It lacked any real crispness and the texture wasn’t great. The scrambled eggs were plain and while the French toast was tasty, it was a tad dense. Overall, it was a good meal apart from my few picky remarks. Server was a sweetheart.

Would’ve left a review for the coffee cake ALONE. It was so so good. We expected just a slice, not a whole loaf. And it was only $6??? The rest of the meal was just as delicious. Service was lovely. Definitely recommend this place, we loved it

James was our server, he was amazing and made the experience so much better! The fresh orange juice is a must have. We had the pancakes and the omelette, both were delicious and made to perfection. You can tell the food is local and fresh, not frozen. The side of fruit is worth it because the fruit isn’t just cantalope and honeydew but instead it’s filled with berries and kiwis that aren’t just cheap filler fruit. The food is amazing and you should go just to meet James because he’s that awesome!

This is a really cool restaurant in downtown KC that provides homemade dishes from locally sourced suppliers. It’s a short walk from several hotels and apartments.

I had the limoncello French toast with scrambled eggs and sausage. My wife had the lemon pop’d tart, fried potatoes and bacon. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. We will definitely be coming back.

One of our new favorite spots for breakfast in the Power & Light District. Walking distance from most of the hotels in this area and seemed safe to walk to. The building is beautiful and well decorated. Doesnt have the vintage vibe of some other buildings in this area, but still very cool. Food was also fantastic, and prices were on par with what you would expect from a breakfast place in this area.
