Decent spot for lunch or dinner. $15 lunch specials and they serve up warm sake. I’d come back for a bento box.
on my most recent visit i got the salmon skin hand roll (10/10) , squid salad (10/10) , seared salmon nigiri (10/10)
the salmon skin is the best ive tried , the roll has a good amount of the salmon skin , also i love that it was separated enough so i could try it on its own , if you’ve never tried it , i highly reccommened it
squid salad is DELICIOUS, this is the first time trying it and my expectations have been set so high , its so full of flavor , every ingredient compliments its self ! def give it a try !
the seared salmon nigiri literally melted in my mouth , it had a perfect toasty taste , and with a little bit of soy sauce , absolutely incredible !
ive been here a couple of times ( i come alone , it feels safe and no judgement ) , so yummy ! the environment is pleasent , really cute . today i tried the eel and octopus nigiri for the first time , yum , im definitely getting them again ! Asahi beer is also delicious, it has a honey after taste . i also had the sweet potato roll , definitely a must try if you like your sweet potatoes ! the potatoes are fried with a crispy outside and theres a chili sauce , i think , it compliments the dish well 🙂
Cold February night, we decided we needed some sushi. The downtown places can be hit-or-miss so we thought we’d try something new. We stumbled upon Hokkaido on Yelp and decided to give it a try.
Greeted immediately, friendly staff, nice ambiance, no complaints there.
4-stars simply comes from the lack of a bar. Good sushi deserves a good martini. That part was super disappointing for me.
The Tempura Veggies, Tempura Shrimp, and Sushi was all lovely. Freshly cooked / prepared and served promptly. Price was on-point and the overall experience was great.
We’d be regulars if they had a full bar. If you live nearby and can tolerate dinner without a martini, give Hokkaido a try – it’s worth it!
But the server never left. After prevaricating for a bit, we took our first tentative, alien bites. It was an epiphany and the beginning of a love for Japan that eventually brought me back to live in Kobe for six years.
When people asked why I had gone, I told them it was because the police were chasing me. The reality, however, was that I was a little lost and thought I could find myself there. Although ridiculous, this turned out to have at least a bit of truth to it.
That, and the food. I loved Japanese cuisine, from the greasy little okonomiyaki places to establishments where sushi plates stacked high like crazy tilting towers. Those places, whether in the Japanese Alps or tucked under the rumble of railroad tracks, were the center of our revolving world.
Now, let me say something about the Hokkaido Sushi Bar: it was honestly some of the best, biggest, freshest sushi I’ve had outside Japan, and in fact, better than many of the places I found there.
It’s not cheap, particularly if your nostalgia and eyes are bigger than your stomach. But it’s value for money. The items are large, and you probably don’t have to order as much as you think. Every bite whispers in your ear, “Damn! I’m worth it!”
I love conveyor belts, I love cheap sushi that is almost a numerical challenge, and those places have their role, both here and in Japan where you run elbows with the workers and the drunk businessmen.
But if you want something truly special that can whisk you away to mysterious lands, then Hokkaido Sushi should certainly be on your list.
