I ordered a small classic ramen which I think was a perfect size and saba nigiri (my favorite). I love how the portion is huge slices. Other items ordered were Karaage Curry Chiken and Tan-Tan-Men. The food came quickly and it was standard nothing really exciting.
It’s not a huge restaurant but it’s also not a hole in the wall. There is a wait. So as soon as you walk in you can sign up for the waiting list. So we got in list and accidentally put four instead of three people. So we got a text our table was ready. This really annoyed me. They said since we had three people and not four that we had to wait because there were two parties with three people ahead of us. Like what? What does it matter? You’re found to seat three people in a table that fits four. Anyways, I just didn’t think the logic made sense.
Yesterday, the ramen noodles arrived as a giant, solid cake of pasta. The main issue was that the noodle container was placed inside the soup container. The heat from the broth kept cooking the noodles, turning them into one big clump before we even got home.
Today, I tried to prevent that by asking the staff to mix the noodles with the soup, thinking it might help. Unfortunately, due to my lack of experience with how ramen should be packaged for take-out, I didn’t realize this would actually make things worse. The waiter also wasn’t clear in explaining that mixing everything together would further ruin the texture. As a result, the noodles were completely soggy and mushy.
This points to two issues:
1. The take-out packaging method needs to change. Noodles should be kept in a separate container from the soup and definitely not placed inside the hot broth container.
2. Staff training needs improvement so customers are clearly advised on what will and won’t work for take-out ramen.
Santouka makes excellent ramen when dining in, but the current take-out execution does not reflect that quality. Until the packaging and communication improve, I would not recommend ordering ramen to go.
Tsukemen tastes great, but we would love it more if they have the option to replace the noodles with Kale noodles.
Bento box was just okay. The Vegas roll in the Bento box was a bit fried that we are not a huge fun of.
The salmon rice looks better in the menu picture with more Ikura on top of it. The taste is also just average.
Overall, since it is a ramen restaurant, we recommend ordering ramen. As for the other small dishes, you may find better options somewhere else.
