Reviews
I was so excited to try this place. Unfortunately, consistency issues kinda ruined the experience. Some of what we ordered was a hit while other parts were a complete miss. Overall, I get the sense this could be a great place if they figure out their kitchen.
I ordered the eel rice bowl. The description said: large eel, seasonal salad, seaweed salad, flying fish roe topped with eel sauce. Right after ordering, I saw a plate of shu mai delivered to a nearby table and asked if they would add an order of them to our order.
A few minutes later the shu mai arived. They were pork-filled and shrimp-topped at the same time. They were served piping-hot, which we took as a good sign. I feel comfortable saying they are made in-house based on how fresh the noodle wrapper tasted. Overall, a great appetizer.
About halfway through the appetizer is when our entrees arrived. I finished the last couple of bites of appetizer and moved on to the entree. The eel was warm, not hot and pretty good. I’m a big fan of bbq eel and know that it comes in either frozen or refrigerated but fully cooked. A real heat-and-eat treat. The eel sat atop a bed of what was described as “seasonal salad” but was just lettuce. I liked the little pile of masago and also the little pile of seaweed salad. The dish fell apart when I made it to the rice. They apparently mix in some sort of coconut flavoring. I suspect it is coconut milk but wouldn’t swear to it. Whatever it was, it turned the rice into an excessively-flavored and slightly pungent mess. Not a fan.
The wife took one bite of a slice of the beef atop her beef shank rice bowl and turned a bit green. Apparently it was cold…like fresh out of the refrigerator cold and very fatty. It pretty much ruined her entire evening.
She asked the waiter about it and he told her it is served hot. No real explanation given for how her’s was served cold but he was willing to exchange it for an eel bowl as long as we would agree to pay the difference. Whatever.
It took a little while for her eel rice bowl to arrive and the eel wasn’t nearly as warm as it was on mine. Also, the rice tasted like regular rice. How could the same kitchen produce two of the same dish less than 10 minutes apart and have them turn out so differently?
I enjoyed my eel bowl but would have rather had her rice. She was sufficiently turned-off on the place by her dinner that I don’t see us making it back.
The biggest shame of the whole experience is that we were so excited for our dinners after the appetizer.
The dining in menu is different than the online menu. You are more limited inside which is weird. I don’t know if that’s accidental or intentional. You can’t order extra egg inside which is annoying because you only get half. Everywhere else you get a whole egg. That’s basic ramen. I don’t get it. Just charge for the egg.
They used to have a great selection of teas but they’ve removed a lot of the ones I loved and they aren’t made as well. The tea was a big reason I liked coming here. But my husband’s tea was awful. He didn’t drink it. My friends was awful, her boyfriends was good and mine was good. So 50/50.
My tonkatsu ramen only had tonkatsu, noodles, broth, corn, half an egg and scallions. No naruto, no seaweed, no bamboo shoots and missing the little extras it had before. It didn’t taste like it used to. The pork and broth were really bland. It used to be my favorite place for ramen.
They brought mine and our friends food out 10 minutes before my husband’s. The appetizer was already gone because of the amount of time we had already waited. So we all got to stare at our ramen while we waited for his because of how rude that is. There was 4 people I feel like that shouldn’t have been hard to time it together. Mine was not hot when it was brought out so it was borderline cold by the time I got to eat.
A couple months ago I just thought there was something wrong either with the kitchen or getting ingredients but no, even worse this time. Other recent reviews are mentioning it going downhill too. I guess that’s just how they are now.
It used to be one of my favorite places. I love the atmosphere. It’s calming and charming, and feels private with how it’s set up. You could tell they put a lot of thought into it when they opened. I’ve picked it for my birthday and Valentine’s day. But it’s basically mall food now. I actually apologized to our friends for suggesting it. I would have rather had a price increase instead of ruining this place. Hopefully one day they can bring back what they were because this is sad. We won’t be back until then
Pro-tip on pickup: The Uber ETA is usually optimistic. Add about 20 minutes to the estimated time unless you want to wait around.
The highlight is actually the interior! The owner has clearly put a lot of heart into the decor. Between the massive floral butterfly wall, the claw machines, and the impressive collection of Lego sets (like Hogwarts!), it’s visually stunning. It’s usually quiet inside, making it a cool place to snap some photos or have a quick chat, even if most of their business seems to be delivery.
Would be nice for more seating when waiting for carry out, though they do have a huge cafe/dining room.
Kiosk didn’t let me pick the sweetness (mango smoothie) so it was way too sweet. Taste only sugar, not fruit and yogurt
