When I arrived, I was looking for indoor seating and was told by Mo, the manager, that no water bottles were allowed and that there was a sign. I apologized and said I would take it back to my car. Before doing that, I briefly set the bottle down outside and went inside to use the bathroom, assuming the rule applied to inside the restaurant only.
While I was gone, Mo approached my table and said, “How are all you crackers doing?” referring to my group. We are all white. My friends were confused and uncomfortable and did not know what had prompted this. After that, Mo noticed the water bottle and gave my group a long and aggressive lecture about it.
I later ordered a top sirloin cooked medium rare. Everyone else at the table received their food from our waitress. My plate, however, was brought out directly by Mo. He said “top sirloin, well, well done,” slammed the plate down in front of me so it clattered and slid across the table, then walked away. I initially thought he was joking, but when I cut into the steak, it was in fact well done.
When I informed the waitress, she took the steak back. She later returned and told me she was not allowed to fix it and that if it were remade, Mo would force her to pay for it herself. She begged me not to speak to him or mention her name anywhere because she was afraid of retaliation.
At that point, I did not feel comfortable eating the steak at all. Given Mo’s behavior, I genuinely feared it may have been tampered with. I asked her to send Mo to our table so I could speak with him, and she refused out of fear for her job. She also told us that Mo has had the police called on him at least twice because of aggressive interactions with customers. Apparently, we were no exception.
I did not eat the steak, yet I was still required to pay for it. I boxed it up and ultimately threw it away because I did not feel it was safe.
Based on the sequence of events, it felt very possible that my food was mishandled in retaliation over the water bottle situation. Whether intentional or not, the behavior was hostile, intimidating, and unacceptable. No customer should be treated this way, and no employee should be afraid to help a guest.
This place would be great if Mo had no part in it. He’s clearly like a sad, angry little man who has no control over his life and takes it out on strangers. I would strongly caution anyone before dining here.
