A standard Cantonese restaurant with decent food but pretty sure the quality could’ve been a lot better.

I came here with my family before an overnight flight to Asia and immediately felt sick afterwards. Everything we ordered seemed incredibly greasy so there was so much oil and sauce slathered on everything. My family decided to order everything vegetarian (and I can’t 100% confidently say it was vegan despite asking) but our gai lan, noodles, and tofu dish was just full of salt and oil.

After a while, my stomach started hurting and the only thing that curbed it were the complimentary sliced oranges to end the meal.

I can’t say I loved the experience (and the service left much to be desired, even as a family that speaks Canto) so I won’t be returning unless family decides to take us here, which was why we came in the first place.

Street parking can be hard but we were lucky to find one not too far away.

It was busy on a Saturday evening with what seems like a lot of regulars. We were a party of 5 and they sat us at a table for 4 and added a chair on the end. Once we ordered, they moved us to a big table. We ordered way too much for 5 people. Ending up taking a lot home.

Everything was very good. Except the veggie was a little too tough/mature. And the mixed mushroom with egg tofu was not mixed mushroom but only one type of mushroom. The egg tofu was very good with the broccoli.

The bbq pork with chicken appetizer was good too. The bbq pork was so juicy and flavorful.

Portions here are very big and prices are reasonable.

Went to this place for lunch with a couple of people, and overall, it was subpar at best. This review will cover all the 3 elements (food, service, atmosphere) as usual.

Firstly, the atmosphere wasn’t impressive whatsoever. The place was old, a bit dirty, and packed with regulars during the time we were there. Wasn’t quite pleasing, but that’s not why we were there. We wanted to know if the food was good.

When it came down to service, the waitress was nice enough and supplied our requests, which was good enough.

When the food came, the portions were BIG and had some wok hay, which is a key component you are looking for when it comes to most Chinese food. Overall mildly impressed, but the dishes can use some more wok hay and cut their meat better (excluding the beef). Otherwise, the food is edible.

Overall, food was good enough, service was alright, and the environment was below average, which wasn’t surprising. What this place needs is a dish that would pop and be the ultimate wow factor. That such dish didn’t exist, hence the 3 star rating. I would still bring friends and family here once in a while, but probably won’t be regulars.

I believe the foods had MSG because I was really thirsty after. Congee could be better if adding ginger. Rice rolls were too hard and too oily. It was disappointed they don’t have 炸兩.
3% surcharge for credit card payment is insane!! Spending $60 for lunch was pricy. I would rather go to dim sum restaurant with better foods and service. Service was average. The reason I gave 2 stars because it’s spacious, not like the one in San Bruno very crowded and noisy. It’s always tough to find parking in this neighborhood.

I was traveling and was looking for a Chinese late night snack. That congee was mighty but a bit on the sweet side. The noodle dish is average or above average. That big fried dough not fresh so it’s all crunchy and hard.

I’m sure this place can cook up some nice dishes since I was traveling and won’t be back until my next trip to South San Francisco.

Generous portion, tasty bbq pork and i like it that they are lean meat. The vegetable went well with the meat and rice. The dessert red bean soup is surprisingly good and not too sweet.

First time at this restaurant, we were both under the weather and needed some soup. We were planning to get some pho but our place was closed today. We found Hing Lung and decided to give it a try. We had shrimp dumplings noodles soup and the fish broth soup. The dumplings were huge and there was four pieces. It was good but the soup was a bit salty. My fish broth cat with a lot of shrimp and fish cakes and balls. The soup was excellent, rich with a complex but neutral flavor. However the noodles in it reminded me of spaghetti noodles which downgraded the dish. The place was packed with 90% Chinese but service was quick. We’ll come back to check out other dishes. Prices were good.

2025 updated. No wait on a Wednesday night. We had the house special rice noodles in fish broth $18 and a ginger & scallion lobster $20. Both were OK and tasted fine. My friend and I weren’t that hungry so two dishes were enough. Good job everyone at Hing Lung.

No wait at noon on a Saturday. For lunch, I had their house special pan fried noodles $14.45. Plenty of bbq pork, other meats, seafood and vegetables on top. 80% of the noodles were soggy though. They put too much gravy on it this time. I personnel prefer my pan fried crispy noodles with less gravy. Regardless it was a good meal. This dish was too big and I had to take 1/2 of it home. Good job kitchen staff at Hing Lung.

Updated review 10/11/2021:
Hing Lung Cafe has to be one of the best Hong Kong style cafes in South San Francisco. My braised beef stew lo mein ($12.45-10% off sale) was absolutely awesome. The beef was tender and perfectly cooked. I asked for less tendons because I prefer it that way. The little cup of soup had good flavor. The usual older women waitress wasn’t working tonight. The rookie crew was a bit slow and sometimes disappeared for 10 minutes at a time. Regardless, the food is good.

Indoor dining 4/27/2021. I’ve returned to Hing Lung to try their other dishes. Tonight I had their wonton lo mein $10 and Hong Kong style spare rib $13. The wonton lo mein tasted great. You can tell how good a Hong Kong style cafe is by how well they do the simple dishes like the noodles, porridge, rice and wontons. They didn’t provide oyster flavored sauce (Lee Kum Kee) that usually accompany this dish. I had to ask for it. That might be a good thing because some people just like it with the side of soup. By Hong Kong standards, the wonton sizes here are adequate. I personally like bigger ones, but Hing Lung gives EIGHT wontons in their lo mein. The bigger wonton places, at most will give you three to six wontons. The HK style spare ribs were not bad. It tasted like deep fried ribs with orange chicken sauce poured over it. I wouldn’t order it again. Overall, a great meal. Service was as expected for a HK style cafe.

Indoor dining 4/13/2021. It is nice to see old favorites resurrected. We used to go to their San Francisco Chinatown location when I was a teen after hanging out in North Beach. We didn’t go to their 19th/Lincoln location as much because it was rumored to be haunted. Tonight, I had the seafood pan fried noodles $13. The flavors didn’t deviate much from their original recipes. The noodles were crunchy and not too soggy from the sauce. Certain dishes aren’t good for takeout or delivery. This is one of them. The noodles don’t taste good if it is not hot and half soaked with their sauce. This was amazing to eat in person. Service was as expected and this place is pretty clean. Great location right next to Starbucks. I can imagine myself coming here more often on the weekends to have porridge and a fried doughnut for a nice brunch.

Service is way better here than the location in San Bruno. The “efin mainland be oches” in the San Bruno location should learn some manners. Food is good here.

I visited this place for the first time. Ordered lobster lo mein noodles and general TSO chicken. Both were fantastic, the portion size was extra ordinary for the price. I also saw the servers carrying huge food plates for customers. The lobster was amazing and really well made. First time I have seen lot of lobster in a meal, and it was hard for me to finish the meal actually, I underestimated this place. Customer service can be improved for carry out customers. The restaurant is located in the downtown and definitely a must place to try great Chinese food and seafoods. Big thumbs up
