We ordered chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, talo fries, and tres leches for dessert. The food was DELICIOUS!!!! Absolutely will be a return customer!! Also, we were blessed to have Adrian as our server!! He was phenomenal!! Ask for him!!!
I ordered the dirty bird, it was fresh and crisp. I did not realize the pickles were bread and butter though, so just for awareness. The coleslaw was creamy but not much flavor. The Korean glaze was great. I was super excited for the tallow fries, I guess I was expecting them to be crispy, but they were soft and pillowy.
My husband got the chicken fried steak, it was AWESOME. The breading goes to the edge of the meat without breading overhang, it was light crispy batter. Honestly one of the best we’ve ever had. The garlic mashed potatoes were killer too. The okra was pretty good too.
We will deff be back. Also honorable mention to the sweet tea and sprite. They have the good ice and the carbonation was crisp.
The food runner, bless him, was a little lost. He forgot our fries and our okra had to go back for both but he was polite. Our waitress was very sweet also!
The vibe is very welcoming and lets you linger in its comfortable seats.
The food is absolutely amazing.
– The dirty bird (fried) is such an amazing sandwich. And the blue cheese slaw :::chefs kiss::: crunchy, perfectly seasoned chicken, topped with buffalo sauce that beams the right heat. Tangy pickles and creamy blue cheese slaw add great contrast, all tucked into a soft, house-made bun that pulls everything together.
– The fries are fried in beef tallow and they are so addictive.
– Loaded pulled pork nachos- where to begin?
Piled high with tender pulled pork and a tangy Carolina BBQ drizzle. A rich, charred jalapeño queso ties everything together, while the pickled onions and jalapeños add just the right pop of acidity. Finished with a cool lime crema and creamy avocado, every bite hits a perfect balance of smoky, spicy and fresh!
This is a perfect hangout place to watch a game on their many TVs.
I ordered the Old Fashioned, which was $12, and it was honestly unlike any Old Fashioned I’ve had before. It looked almost transparent when it came out, and it tasted very watered down. It seemed like a bottom-shelf bourbon mixed with simple syrup and water rather than the bourbon-forward, balanced drink you expect from an Old Fashioned. For the price, it really missed the mark.
I also got the chips with salsa, queso, and guacamole.
Salsa: Fire-roasted and actually pretty tasty, but I think it would shine even more if they served it warm.
Queso: Mild in flavor; you can tell real cheese was used, which is nice, but it didn’t have much spice or depth. Decent, just not very memorable.
Guacamole: Fresh but very avocado-heavy. It felt like it was missing a key balancing flavor.
For one drink and the chips trio, the total was about $30. That feels high compared to the overall quality of what I received.
I’m willing to give Hilltop Tavern another try because it’s new and has potential, but my first experience didn’t quite justify the price.
They do add a 3% fee when paying with a credit card. Not my favorite thing, but they disclose it upfront, so it’s understandable.
