Cheap eats and dry meats – my slogan for HRS.

On my tray were astonishingly dry portions of turkey and brisket – so dry, one might think they would be shelf-stable in a vacuum sealed bag. The cornbread contributed a mouthful of sand to this desert of a meal.

The green beans acted like they were poured out of a can. The salty scalloped potatoes tasted like something found in a dollar store equipped with freezers. The ranch beans actually weren’t half bad – and they were moist! I drained their juicy reserves like a greedy oil baron to help make the dry brisket and turkey palatable.

Was there sauce? Yes, there was sauce – but it was thick, pasty, and unable to contribute any moisture to the dry food. The flavors were uninspiring.

Counter service was friendliness at about 10 kilowatts. These people beamed, and answered all my questions with wide, genuine smiles. That was nice I suppose, but it didn’t help the bad food. The restaurant was brightly lit, crowded, and a little dirty – the staff were busy behind the counter and I didn’t see any venture out to clean off tables. You might very well have to clean some ick off yours.

One solid plus, I guess, is that I got a lot of food for around $20. That’s hard to come by these days. Unfortunately, the food was dry and gross. If you want cheap barbeque and don’t care about the quality, this could be your place. Everyone else is advised to steer clear.

Service was very good. The portions were good, I thought, for the Combo 2. The food was well flavored. Atmosphere didn’t appear very flashy to me, kinda simple and I liked that. It wasn’t busy when we went for dinner. Overall a nice dining experience.

Westley Tipton gave us some of the best customer service I’ve ever received. I will be returning to this restaurant because the food was very delicious and filling. Here at hickory river the atmosphere made me feel like I was at home.

Never got my discount for the daily specials. Got 2 kids meals through takeaway. Paid full price, it’s on me for not realizing at the register, $6 loss, oh well. Good food. Also the parking lot entrance/exit suck, but that’s not entirely their fault.

For the price, this is a 5 star place. Went on Tuesday- got 4 ribs, 3 pulled pork and 3 beers plus a $3 tip and I was out $18! Check out the pic. Even their regular menu items are reasonably priced. You order at the counter so can get in and out quickly. Lots of tables inside and outside. They cut the meat in front of you. Meat was cooked nice and juicy. Employees friendly. The same amount of food at a TN, MO, or TX bbq joint would be double the price.

First time here for our 35th Anniversary. Could smell the food outside. Service counter was great, well mannered and courteous young men. Food was delicious, meats were good and sides were good, cornbread a little dry but good.

It’s not Texas style. It’s not Memphis style. It’s not Kansas’s or Carolina style either. This is just local BBQ done the way locals seem to like it. Locals seem to really like. As for me, it’s just okay but not my preferred style.

Some items to note. Cornbread here, not plain white bread or Texas Toast. Thick bold sauce here, not thin vinegar based or brown surgar sweet or excessive dry rub on this lightly smoked meat.

The slaw was terrific. Was pleased that it was not mayo based. A good splash of apple cider vinegar would have made it a wow (or if they like to stick with being different, a splash of rice wine vinegar would hit the spot as well).

The potato salad was a standard mustard style. It was executed perfectly for that style. It’s just not my style.

The chili was definitely local northern style as it was bean and tomato based. While not my preferred style, the chili had a nice mild flavor everyone could enjoy, although a bit on the soupy side. Thicker and spicier would be my style, hold the beans too.

The sausage was good quality. The bold sauce overpowered the sausage though. Next time, sauce on the side or skip the sauce when it comes to the sausage.

The ribs were a nice cut, trimmed perfectly, and average on tenderness. The sauce for me though, too thick and too bold on flavor. And the rub, didn’t seem to exist.

Finally the quarter chicken. This was a great bird. The meat juicy and tender. Would have liked a little more smoke and a lot more rub, but overall the chicken was great. Just skip the sauce or get it on the side (note to self who is not a fan of any of the three sauce choices).

So it’s local Ohio BBQ. It’s the local way. And the locals seem to give this bold saucy, lightly rubbed, and lightly smoked style the thumbs up. As for me, it’s just okay (skip the sauce).

Had an unplanned group of about 15 roll in on a Sunday afternoon. I found out as we arrived that nobody had actually called ahead. The staff were very accommodating with our group and even let us sit in the group area. The service was fast and the food was delicious (as always) which led to a wonderful experience by all. I would highly recommend Hickory River!
