The consistent savory menu standouts after having been there three times are the chicken liver mousse toast, milk rolls, shaken rice and kimchi. These are always great to enjoy and share – balanced in flavor, not overtly salty, interesting textures and fun to try! It’s fun to see what kimchi they have on rotation. Though they’ve changed from serving a kimchi assortment to just one type. (Unfortunate!)
The fried chicken (their main centerpiece created in collaboration with Deuki Hong) is extremely crispy, and has a good batter. It does appear the chicken itself isn’t brined, so it leaves flavor and moisture to be desired in a Korean style fried chicken. Still nice to try once, and the skin is enjoyable separately with their 3 housemade sauces.
The galbi at the pricepoint is not amazing. Flavor wise it’s fine, but you’ll receive 4 pieces of basic kbbq galbi. I would recommend skipping it. Nothing to write home about.
Their dessert is the star of the menu, and the main reason I come back! A red miso ice cream full set with all the toppings. It’s a revelation with the creme brulee banana. If you’re brave, they used to offer candied anchovies as a topping for that perfect addition of umami.
The service was wonderful and we were even able to chat with the chef. There were flavors and textures I never knew existed. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted absolutely delicious.
We both left full and happy with the selection of appetizers and sides as well as the serving sizes for two.
note the 22% service charge wasn’t disclosed prior to receiving the check… but if you aren’t able to tip you probably shouldn’t be eating out.
The food was incredible across the board. The Pork Ribs & Popcorn Chicken were the definite standouts, and the Red Miso Ice Cream is an absolute must-order dessert.
What We Ordered:
• Green Cocktail
• Cucumber Pickle
• Popcorn Chicken
• Oysters
• Pork Ribs
• Hickory Plum Salad
• Potato Pave
• Kimchi ️
• Red Miso Ice Cream
I would take another picture, but I ate all the mousse.
I think I was pretty whelmed. This was one of the restaurants that like people like to make fun of Denver for: like really expensive, mediocre food with a 22% surge charge.
It started promising (kinda) with the beef tartare which was mixed with gochujang and some pine nuts. As a side note, I also love that a lot of tartares are incorporating bold Asian flavors (this one and the one at Brasserie Brixton). However, these are supposedly “shareable”; like, if it’s shared by ants then sure.
Then came the wagyu! First of all, I wasn’t asked a temp so I was like ok, maybe they cooked it mid-rare (I usually do rare). The temp was bordering on medium. And my god, that was probably the sweetest steak I’ve ever had. I think it was marinated with a bunch of sugar to “complement” the savory dip that comes with it. For me, that doesn’t work. The steak itself should be absolutely delicious without a sauce but not at Hey Kiddo apparently.
The sides (which you have to order separately) weren’t that impressive. There’s an “array of pickles” you can order and the special charred bokchoy with chili crisps on top. They were all things I could make at home and I was stuck wondering why I didn’t just make dinner at home.
Ended awkwardly with the sashimi, which was pretty ok but had like 4 pieces of hamachi surrounded by a (rather delicious) sauce. As far as crudos go, it’s no where near the top of what I’ve had.
I found the concept of the menu to be really confused, as in it’s trying to incorporate Asian ingredients/flavors into dishes that weren’t executed well or designed to begin with, and you can really taste it in its dishes. lol and service, forget about it and it wasn’t even a busy night at all.
In my humble opinion, this is one of the most overrated restaurants in the city and the amount of good words this has is astounding. Good for them and its fans tho!
Did I mention there’s an automatic 22% surcharge? If it was a good dinner I’d be more than happy to pay but like when steak ate sweet and the sides are underwhelming, I feel really cheated.
Maybe I went on an off-season?
Overall, it felt hit-or-miss. A few dishes were great, some I didn’t enjoy at all, and most were just not that memorable. The menu felt a bit all over the place, like it’s trying to do too much without a clear focus. For the high price point, I think there are other spots in town that deliver a more satisfying food experience.
At the end of our meal, our waitress also offered to seat us in their cool speakeasy style bar to finish our drinks. This was so smart on their part to keep service running but also greatly enhanced our experience!
Our only feedback is they were out of the Italian red that we wanted and we weren’t a huge fan of the Zinfandel the we ordered instead.
