Henry’s Hunan Restaurant

  4.1 – 709 reviews  $$ • Chinese restaurant

Henry’s Hunan is a family-owned business that started back in 1974 by Henry and Diana Chung. When the pair began missing the flavors of their hometown, they recreated its signature dishes and wanted to share it with the world. Today, its success is shown through many locations scattered around San Francisco— each independently owned and operated. The Natoma location is run by Henry’s grandson, Frank.

Long-running local chain serving Hunan-style Chinese dishes in a relaxed setting.

I love coming back to Henry Hunans. Tugged away in a little side street just next to Salesforce Park, this family owned restaurant offers solid Chinese American cuisine. Love their stuffed pancake appetizer and dumplings.

Woohoo! Finally found a legit Hunan restaurant at downtown. Henry’s Hunan represents those older fashioned street-side restaurants in China whereas Ping’s Bistro (another top notch Hunan food chain) is more modern and higher-end, while both are very authentic.

I have been coming here for years but left for a five year stint out of SF. Returning here today was essential to find all the flavors I remembered and love. I was not disappointed and the food was excellent and delicious. It was a happy return to really authentic Chinese food that I remembered!

The Chinese menu has all the good stuff, making it different from all other Henry’s Hunan.

Really amazing spicy food. If you are mexican and believe this is not spicy just try it out! I was one of those and have to take back my words. But ended up enjoying a lot!

I recently had the misfortune of dining at this establishment and found it necessary to share my disappointing experience. As a patron of many different eateries, I believe in fair and balanced reviews, hence why this one is rather hard to write.

The Kung Pao Shrimp was more like a Kung Pao Bell Peppers with a small side of shrimpy grizzle. The small chunks of shrimp were barely larger than my finger nails and the dish was entirely too salty. I was warned that the dish would be very spicy but it ended up being just a salt bomb. The eggplant dish was just tolerable because it would balance out the extreme saltiness of the shrimp dish. But on its own the eggplant dish is not worth getting for taste, texture, anything. I do not recommend these two dishes and I cannot speak for any other dish but I myself will not be returning for a second try.

Walked in, read the menu, ordered takeout and less than 10 minutes later I am out the door with my food. First time at Henry’s and I wish I was prepared to sit and have a meal, but I was unprepared. Have proof of vaccine if you wish to eat dine-in. Friendly and quick. I have a bit of sticker shock ordering pork belly in spicy chile $18.72 total, but I was intrigued. The dish was different than what I imagined, but this may be normal as I chose without a picture and with not enough questions asked on my part. I will order differently next time and check out their $11 weekday lunch plate. Many patrons looked happy with their choices who dined in.

Good food that one would expect from a decent Chinese restaurant. Comfort food in a way. Fast service, there’s usually ample seating and the prices are reasonable. I’d go back for all of those reasons.
