On to the garlic tonkotsu aka The Van Helsing! The white soup base was hot and creamy thick with a healthy dose of umame bone flavoring. The first spoon of broth immediately hit the spot. It reminded me of a mild French mushroom soup without all that corn starch thickener.
When tugged and stretched, the noodles retained their shape (not overcooked). A whole egg slice in half adorned the dish and had an appealing slight smokey sweet marinade to it.
The two slice of pork tasted like firm sweet ham.
Bamboo slices and baby mung bean sprouts gave every bite a fresh crunch.
Garlic and scallions were abundant but not overwhelming.
Parking in Downtown Helena is free after 5pm, on Front Street by the US Courthouse. Pay close mind to the parking signage. I was parked at Memorial Park by the Starbucks, which is free all day. It was a pleasant hike to and from there.
5 out of 5.
Unfortunately, the flavors fell flat. The ramen lacked the richness I was hoping for, and the chicken karaage was surprisingly bland and not crispy. I usually love the vibrant flavors you find in Asian cuisine, so this meal was a bit of a disappointment.
Helena natives love this place. I can understand why.
Not a bad spot if you’re stopping around the area.
Had a pot of tea. The pot was amazing. They wouldn’t sell me the pot. Sad.
The food here wow’d me; I didn’t expect this restaurant to be so good. We got the Spicy Miso bowl, Garlic Tonkatsu, and Karrage. The soft boiled agg is a must. 5☆’s
Their ramen options are impressive, with flavorful broths and generous portions. The Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen is a fan favorite, with a rich, savory broth and springy noodles. If you’re in the mood for something spicy, the Spicy Ramen is a great choice.
The service is also top-notch, with friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
Overall, Hokkaido Ramen & Izakaya is a must-visit for anyone in Helena looking for authentic Japanese cuisine. Whether you’re a ramen enthusiast or a sushi aficionado, this restaurant is sure to impress.
