My boyfriend and I came here our first night in Vermont while on a road trip and staying at the resort for three nights — and we loved it so much that we ordered it for pickup the very next day! Everything was fantastic, from the food to the service. Our waitress (I wish I could remember her name!) was absolutely wonderful — so kind, upbeat, and genuinely happy to be at work. She was serving us in the Birch Room on Wednesday the 8th around 7:15 PM, if that helps identify her, because she deserves some recognition!
We came all the way from Missouri, and The Hearth & Candle did not disappoint. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area — and you must get the deviled eggs and fried tomatillos… oh my gosh, they were amazing!

We dine here every year for 4 years. Dishes are as delicious as before. But my kids were extremely disappointed this year. My son entered the coloring contest and won. To my surprise, the manager didn’t give the ice cream sundae as they did in previous years whe my kids won. He just said thank you. My son was disappointed.

We decided to try this place for dinner and brought our five kids along. From the moment we walked in, the host and manager were warm and welcoming, and we were seated quickly. The food absolutely lived up to the hype — every dish we ordered was excellent.
Where things fell apart was the service.
Although we were told it wasn’t a particularly busy night, the pacing felt unusually slow throughout the evening. Our server was friendly at first, but after we casually asked about her accent, the interaction noticeably changed. She seemed uncomfortable with the question and from then on became distant and short in her responses.
Most requests were met with “I’ll be right there,” followed by long gaps where we wouldn’t see her for 10–15 minutes. When we were ready to pay, she was cleaning the empty table beside us. We asked if she could take our card, but she didn’t acknowledge us and continued wiping the table. She eventually walked away, returned about 10 minutes later to grab the card, and then it took another stretch of time before the payment was processed.
We understand everyone can have an off night, and we truly enjoyed the food. But since this was our only visit, the service left us disappointed. A restaurant with food this good deserves service that matches it.

We hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner at Hearth & Candle and had a lovely experience. The food was flavorful and prepared with fresh ingredients, and the cocktails were also very tasty. The ambiance was cozy and we loved being able to have the entire restaurant for our friends and family, right on site at Smugglers Notch Resort. The owner Akash was extremely hospitable and easy to work with. He allowed us to arrive early to decorate the space, pick the music we wanted playing, and had menus printed specifically for our rehearsal dinner. My husband and I dined there the night before our rehearsal dinner as well and had another great meal.

My husband and I make an annual trip to smuggler‘s notch every year. I’m not exaggerating when I say that we plan our trip around the dates that The Hearth & Candle is open. They close briefly after Thanksgiving and we always have to make sure that we come back when they have reopened. I have never had a bad meal here, in fact every meal has always exceeded expectations. The quality of ingredients is top-notch, and the unique dishes, always surprise me. The staff is welcoming and friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. The best seat in the house is a cozy 2 person table right in front of their fireplace. A must visit restaurant if you are in the area. We already can’t wait to come back next year.

We came to the restaurant with our five kids for dinner. We were seated swiftly, the manager and host were very helpful and welcoming. The food was amazing, but the wait was very very long (for not very busy day, as the manager told us)
Our server started out nicely, but then it seems she got annoyed by us. Maybe it was that we asked where her accent is from. She was very weirded out by this question, tried to dodge it, as if this was improperly personal. And since that moment she was borderline rude. She was answering ’ll be right there” to anything we would ask and disappear for 10-15 minutes. She was wiping the empty table next to us when we asked her to take our card- she wouldn’t even turn around and say that “she will be right there.” Then continued wiping table, while we were waiting for her to turn around. After this she just left and came back 10’min later, took our card and was back in another 15 minutes. Maybe she had a bad day, but it was our only time here.

We got dinner here last night, the food was good and the staff was great. I got the lobster and pasta special which was pretty good and my wife got the lamb rack which was also good. My kids got a chicken parm and a cheese burger. We all got deserts and the bill came to 200$. We try to eat here when we visit Smuggs it’s good! Oh and you have to make a reservation

From cocktails to dessert, Hearth and Candle was exceptional. I heartily recommend the Bread and Butter, Crispy Pork Belly, Crab cake, and Beef Tartare appetizers. The bread and butter may sound like a boring choice, but it was heavenly. My family said the beef tartare was outstanding.
For dinner, we had Filet Mignon, Scallops, Duck Cassoulet, and a Strip Steak special. Each of them was a gastronomic celebration. The Filet Mignon melted in my mouth and my tastebuds will never forget the complimenting flavors. I think the Filet Mignon was the best choice, but some voted for the scallops.
Dessert was Maple Creme Brulee which I will dream about for the rest of my life. My family had the apple crisp, which they said was the best they ever had. The cheese cake was thoroughly enjoyed also.
The best cocktails we had were the Ube Painkiller (clarified), La Sidre, and Strawberries and Cream (clarified). I am not normally a cocktail drinker and I thought all of these were out of this world.

To say that we were not impressed is an understatement. Our server was great, attentive and kind, but it was not at the caliber of a high end restaurant. The food was just okay. 4 of 5 of us got the filet mignon and while it was good the mashed potatoes were served cold. The other guest in our party got the salmon and it was without a doubt the smallest piece of salmon we’ve ever been served – maybe a max of 3oz for $38!! The drinks were just okay, nothing to write home about and the best part of our meal was the bread and the couple of ice cream desserts ordered. All in all for over $400 it was disappointing.

A favorite in Vermont that surprisingly gets better every time! I remember coming here when I was a kid and it being delicious – they have fantastic options for kids as well as a ‘young adult’ menu that gives higher quality food in smaller portions for the older kids. After visiting this past time, we really noticed some of the food shot up in quality – all our appetizers were extremely unique and delicious, and the entrees were fantastic portions and great! I started with the duck quesadillas, and it was prepared amazingly! For the entree I had the steak frites and it was great! Sampled the whitefish (I believe swordfish) from someone in our party and it was delicious garnished in a chimichurri sauce! Be prepared, the restaurant is pretty expensive, but if you are looking for your ‘night-out’ dinner, this is a great option with some delicious food. Will be back again many times!!
