And that’s what he’s done here. And he does it well.
If I lived closer I would visit this place weekly.
The nigiri is fresh and expertly made. The portions are large, and we regularly order the tofu salad, chicken katsu, curry. There is a good selection of sake and beer.
Both my friend decided to walk here since we live nearby, plus their parking lot isn’t that big. We both ordered different rolls and some beer to enjoy. For a weekend evening, it was packed and there was a wait to be seated. Compared to other sushi restaurants nearby, I prefer this place because the chef is actually Japanese so you know the food is authentic, whereas other spots may have a non-Japanese owner/chef. Everything is what you’d expect and well worth their price range. Like I mentioned earlier, their $5 dine-in deals is a bargain if you’re on a budget and the options that they have aren’t too shabby.
The service is on point and friendly. It wasn’t very busy as we went for an early dinner. The food came out quickly and was fresh. The sushi was good. I made the mistake of ordering the curry and rice without the chicken katsu. I thought there would be some chunks of veggies or something in the curry but there wasn’t. It was just the curry sauce. I won’t do that again.
They currently have some 1 year anniversary specials for dine in that are pretty good.
There is parking on both sides of the establishment.
Karage chicken $5 were soft and crispy on the outside. But it had the wrong sauce (it should come with mayo or spicy mayo) but it had ponzu sauce that you would get with soft shell crab. We had to ask for the correct sauce.
Beef don $16 comes with miso soup but we had to ask numerous times to get it 🙁 beef slices were over cooked and onions should have been softer. Miso soup is pretty good!!
Mussels $5 – standard but I think it’s overly seasoned with soy sauce
Service wise: an order was delivered wrong to our table and my husband had to walk to server to get his attention.
I would like to see the servers communicate with each other more and seat customers on a timely manner.
I’ve lived in San Gabriel for most of my life. We haven’t had a local Japanese restaurant in the area for quite some time. We especially haven’t had one that was Japanese owned and operated. You’ll often find the chef and owner working in the back.
The food is delicious. We had the agedashi tofu, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and edamame to start. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was easily my favorite starter.
The chicken katsu curry was my entree. The chicken was moist and perfectly breaded to pair with the hearty curry. My girlfriend had the tempura udon. She thoroughly enjoyed it. We also shared an eel avocado cut roll.
We finished everything off with the green tea mochi ice cream and black sesame ice cream.
Everything tastes like it was made from scratch. We will most definitely come back!
