We went here because they’re on Fetch and wanted to try something new. (They’re also on Upside) So we got points, cash back and a great meal.

It’s decorated so cute!

The young lady who waited on us was very pleasant and attentive.

The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. The burritos we ordered were both below $10 each! Lots of flavor and a great value!

Come check it out!

They are working on their liquor license, so no booze when we went, but that’s ok. The food was good. I had the picadillo and it was tasty. The rice was probably a touch underdone, but I didn’t mind since it was mixed with the hash and beans. We also had the bacon-wrapped moduras, which were amazing. The service was fine. When the food came out, they just kind of handed plates to people without caring whose food it actually was (good thing we were all friends). I’d definitely go back. The food was good and the place is cute. I honestly forget there are restaurants in that part of St. Peters.

This little place in old town St. Peters , MO , “Havana 1961” , was a very unique & different type of restaurant . We ordered up a Papu’s Po’ Boy (extremely tasty) , a bowl of special Garbonzo soup (really good) , Cuban-Tamale with rice & black beans (good) , Tamale Tacos (very good) . Our server , Emma , was a really nice young lady . Our wait time to receive our order was fairly short . While we were eating , the owner came by & asked how the food was . Kinda cool to see the owner take that much interest in their product & how their customers are enjoying their time in their establishment . The only thing that is not too good , is finding parking .

Found this place as I was driving back from Kansas City.
I was craving Cuban food, I know downtown Stl has a restaurant as well, just didn’t feel like having to drive into downtown for it.

Missouri aesthetics mixed with Cuban cuisine
Ordered the Ropa Vieja, a roasted beef in tomato and other spices that give it a unique and delicious flavor all its own.
Side dishes accompanying the main dish was savory black beans and rice.

We really liked this unique spot. We attempted to order empanadas, but they didn’t have any. So, we ordered 2 sandwiches, a pork sandwich and the Cuban. Both were tasty, but very greasy and had a bit too much cheese. We liked the rice & beans. Expect big portions at a decent price. Cute atmosphere.

Review update:
Went with my wife for a lunch date and this did not disappoint. We got the cuban sandwich, tostones and I had a cuban coffee.

The sandwiches are huge. I have eaten one on my own in a single sitting amd while very happy I ended up stuffed. The size makes them ideal for sharing or taking home for a second meal.

We enjoyed the tostones though as a personal preference I like the maduros better.

One thing to note is that the hours on Google (as of this writing) are not accurate. They are not open on Sunday per their website and the poated hours on the door.

Great food, good service. Also the music level has been adjusted to a much more conversation friendly level.

Original Review:
Went here with my daughter as a way of trying something new. It did not disappoint.

First, the restaurant is easy to find so that is a plus and is a charming establishment. Great ambiance.

The menu is one page, front side only. Some might say this is limited but I say it is just focused to ensure excellence. Several options to choose from.

That said my two points of disappointment were 1. Tamales take 30ish minutes to make and 2. They were out of the crispy shrimp. Given the quantities served this probably saved my gut and it means I have to come back. So it worked out for the best but still… my inner gordy wanted to stuff itself.

What I did try was the pernil and my daughter got the small order of toston nachos. Quantities are very generous and the pork was very flavorful. Personal preferences would have had more cilantro sauce for the nachos. That is not to say there wasn’t enough just that my daughter is a sauce with food person instead of a food with sauce person.

I capped the meal off with a cafe de leche. I love Cuban coffee. The entire reason I first searched for and found this place was my search for Cuban coffee. It did not disappoint. The flavor and sweetness was spot on.

I would also point out they have a Taste of Cuba family meal which looks to be very reasonably priced. The owner/chef came to talk with us and when I mentioned coming with another couple she said thry would push tables together since there is “so much food.” My inner gordy rejoices and I can’t wait to come back.

My one point of improvement is the music level. I love the music and recognize part of the issue is where we sat, half way across the main dinning room from the TV, but it was just a little loud for me. When I come back I will definitely sit a bit farther away. This is one of those things where you can’t get it right for everybody I suppose but just my thought on this one item.

I’ve heard a lot about Havana 1961 and wanted to give it a try. Cuban sandwiches are one of my favorites, so of course I had to try one.I also ordered Arroz de Papu. I was at a table of four. There were only about four other table while we were there. It was about 15 minutes until we were brought the Arroz de Papu. I waited for the others to get their food, but about 10 minutes later we were told that there was a photo shoot going on and that they were making dishes for them to photograph first, then they would get ours right out. Needless to say, the Arroz was finished before the others even got their food. That was disappointing.
When I did finally get my Cuban, it was greasy and falling apart – when it was cut, the ham was hanging off one side and the pork off the other, so I had to re-stack the whole thing. The ham and pork had a good flavor, but it was so cheesy that it overpowered the whole sandwich. I couldn’t taste the mustard tang at all.
We’ll have to give Havana 1961 another try, because obviously something happened this day.

My wife and I heard about this wonderful place on 101.9 NewstalkStl in St. Louis earlier today and went right out there for dinner. What a wonderful place and the food was outstanding. ¡Sabroso! The portions were amazing and the taste knocked our socks off. Everyone needs to go and eat here. We will be back for more!!!

Discovered this spot last weekend and we decided to come back a week later cause the food was that good. We tried the beef empanadas and the ham croquettes appetizer and both were very good. For mains we had the Cuban Philly sandwich (pictured) as well as the pork sub. The cheese is gooey and melts perfectly into each bite. The ropa vieja was a specialty dish that was very savory and slow cooked. The food is plentiful as we took home half our meal both times. Maria, the owner, was personable even when she was clearly busy and had her hands full. We are glad to have this new spot in St. Peters.

I was so excited to try the oxtails, but they were extremely dry and tough. The beans (and oxtails) had nice flavor but were very watery. The rice was fine. I want to give them another try because the owner was pleasant but I was quite disappointed.
