ard Knox Cafe delivers a comforting, no-frills Southern dining experience that feels both nostalgic and welcoming. From the moment I walked in, the warm red tones, casual booths, and soulful décor made it feel like a neighborhood staple rather than a tourist spot. The food is hearty, generous, and clearly cooked with care this is the kind of place where comfort food truly lives up to its name. Service felt genuine and attentive without being rushed, which made the entire meal feel relaxed and enjoyable. Portions are satisfying, especially if you’re hungry or sharing dishes family-style. It’s the kind of restaurant where you linger, talk, and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the food. Overall, Hard Knox Cafe feels authentic, approachable, and deeply rooted in comfort and community.

probably the best southern place in the city! the arts and vibe reminded me well of my visit to Louisiana, foods are amazing (oxtails and gumbo are a must try if you like it). great for weekend brunch or just catch up with family and friends. also plenty of parking in the area!

A very interesting place!
Atmospheric in its own way. At first glance, the interior doesn’t really stand out, but after the first bite, you start to sink into the experience and see everything from a completely different perspective.

The food is delicious, and the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming.

Highly recommended.

Hard Knox is a great value and I’d highly recommend coming here. The portions are absolutely huge and usually end up taking food home. The corn bread that comes with the entrees is great and is always hot and fresh.

The staff are all really friendly and their service is excellent.

Hard Knox Cafe is amazing! The service was amazing, the atmosphere was nice, giving down home vibes w/music just loud enough to talk and enjoy. We had the Cajun Shrimp Balls, Spicy Fried Chicken, Fried Catfish, Macaroni, Greens, Yams, Red Beans & Rice and Beignets. All food was good and portions were plenty. Our waitress was so kind, service infused with love!

Bomb 10/10, would recommend !

My thirteen year old son have walked passed Hard Knox Cafe for months now, salivating as we watched people chowing down on soul food deliciousness. We finally dined at Hard Knox Cafe on Saturday and Sunday, and it did not disappoint! We were thrilled with the ox tail entree, jambalaya, fried chicken, corn bread, coleslaw, red beans and rice, and even the hamburger delivered above and beyond. Compared to Sf’s overpriced standards, Hard Knox is surprisingly reasonable. The hamburger is only $12 and comes with a generous side. And the entrees are so generously portioned, two people can share one entree if you order an extra side dish or two. My son doesn’t generally care for bread or muffins, but raved about the freshly baked corn bread. The oxtail was beyond heavenly: fall off the bone tender, with a lot of meat on the bones, and a perfectly seasoned sauce that was at once flavorful and mellow. Our servers on both days were amazing: attentive, professional, friendly, and extra kind and accommodating to our dog in the outdoor seating area. Hard Knox is our new favorite restaurant!

An outstanding southern comfort eatery deep in the Richmond. You’re definitely leaving with the “itis” after eating here. Very good portions at reasonable prices served in a family friendly environment. Number one is going have to go to the smothered pork chop, excellent. A close second is the blackened catfish, suggested by our waiter. Delicious. The fried chicken had a wonderful flavor to it. Successful. The sides all delivered as promised and the corn muffins were awesome. This is definitely a place for gatherings and families.
Dos thumbs up

I came in on a drizzly day, wanting a burger. Mission accomplished. My burger was really good! I needed to get some work done and they let me sit in my booth for as long as I’d liked because it wasn’t as busy at the time. I stayed so long and watched other people’s food come out of the kitchen, as well as the delicious smell that I ordered a piece of chicken and a side of greens and cornbread. It was yummy! I will definitely be back because they had a good menu selection, the service was great, and the atmosphere was cozy.
