I’ve been to quite a few Happy Joe’s restaurants – including several that no longer exist. This location is, hands down, the best. I think the secret is that these folks still make their own crust, and it has that marvelous crisp bottom that gives each bite a marvelous crunch. They are also generous with their toppings, unlike some places. And, best of all, they have avoided the buffet trap, which means that all of their pizzas are made fresh to order – and taste great!

12/17/25 had a wonderful experience picking up pizza. The workers were all extremely friendly and made sure that I had everything I needed (including ample taco sauce) before leaving. I immediately wanted to write a review for the pleasant experience I had. Would highly recommend!!!

I think that this location is just as much fun, if not more, to quietly watch and observe as the Century Dr. location. They’re quite literally ALWAYS busy. The people seem to have a reserved, chaotic system and routine that most definitely works for them. It’s organized chaos is fascinating 2 watch. Arms and elbows flying, noisy chattering amongst everyone adding 2 the interesting scene. The store is always clean and inviting. I love 2 go in there either 2 eat or pick up in the winter bc it’s always nice and toasty in there. Not 2 mention the absolute delicious and delightful aroma that hits and envelopes U the exact moment U enter the store. And their pizza absolutely can’t be beaten. It’s as good today as it was when they first opened up. Nothing about their menu offerings has gone downhill at all. It’s all still freakishly delicious

I ordered a large BLT tonight and the person on the phone told me it would be ready in 30 minutes and that’s when my wife got there. It took them an ADDITIONAL 40 minutes and every time my wife asked about it the teenagers who were working wouldn’t actually work, they just kept messing around. I have never had an issue with Happy Joes, but this whole experience has me questioning whether or not we will be back.

Prices are way out of control at this and all other happy joes. Almost $40 for one large pizza, that is absolutely insane. You used to see happy joes cars all over Dubuque but now it is very rare to see one, your prices are killing your business.
Tried it again, $40 for half raw doughy garbage.
God bless

This is a true classic Family Pizza restaurant that will teleport you back to the golden age of pizzerias. No wonder it has a cult following.
We’ve been to the University location twice on family trips to Dubuque, and the food and service stood out both times. The pizza is great and stands out from the crowd, and Dubuque has some strong pizza competition.
Happy Joe’s service is exceptional. Thanks to Manager Bob and the super cool drivers for making our family vacation dining in an unforgettable experience. What a great memory.
I recommend the sausage (satisfyingly small crumble), their local faves the Taco and BLT, and the Happy Joe’s Special (“Iowa Style” with Canadian bacon and Sauerkraut). You can order half & half so take advantage.
It’s worth noting that the pies are big and the cost is reasonable. Great value for a family trip, especially if you have a refrigerator in your hotel.
We look forward to returning!

The food was excellent as well as the service. I had the special which was reasonably priced. The only issues is if you are eating in the building there is no air conditioning and it’s hot in there!
