Everything else was just as bad. Vegetables were drenched in soy sauce to the point of being inedible, the steak and salmon had zero seasoning or flavor, and the spicy tuna roll fell apart the second I touched it — sloppy, amateur rolling. The only halfway decent thing was the fried rice, and even that wasn’t worth the risk of eating here.
What makes this worse is that I’ve eaten here before and it was fine dining in, but takeout was a complete train wreck. This was hands-down the worst hibachi meal I’ve had in Albany in years. If I could give negative stars, I would.
Do yourself a favor: do not order pickup or delivery from here unless you want mistakes, poor quality, and potential allergy risks. I will never order from here again. Real review!
It’s at 1620 Western Ave, Albany, NY close to the Thruway.
Walking into the dim waiting area I was entranced by small fuchsia lights arrayed on a small tree. That was only the first of ongoing decorative delights. Tapestries festooned the spaces dividing table areas and decorating common areas.
Decorations are nice but the food was spectacular. Delicate green tea and gorgeous sushi delighted our taste buds. And it’s served on beautiful Japanese stoneware.
The service was very pleasant completing the reasons we like to eat at restaurants.
The tempura was especially wonderful. It felt light and delicately crunchy.
Now we need to start saving up for the steakhouse part of the menu. Judging by the exquisite dinner we experienced, I bet it’s amazingly wonderful too.
By the way, in case you’re closer to Hudson, NY, we also recommend a delightful Japanese restaurant there called Wasabi.
Enjoyed teriyaki steak, shrimp, fried vegis and superb noodles. Great waitress and chef. Highly recommended the food and experience.
The service was great, and the theater of all of the fire making and spatula tossing can be quite fun. My problem was that there was a very large group of what looked like late teens or early college aged individuals on a table behind us. And literally they screamed every 2 minutes. They screamed when there was fire, they screamed when their zucchini pieces were tossed at them, etc., so it was really, really loud. We were in the room with a very high ceiling, so I’m sure that made it worse. If you make a reservation you can ask for a seat on the quiet, bar side. It was clear that it was a lot quieter there.
The service was good, plentiful, and properly cooked, although I wished they had picked up our empty soup and salad plates sooner. Our chef had clearly learned the routine, but a bit of smiling would have been nice. However, in his defense, it was probably really, really hot over that steaming hot griddle.
All in all, if you want a bit of theatrical cooking in front of you, you will get a kick out of this place. I always lean towards a quieter dinner out.
We were disappointed that there was no happy hour due to Mother’s Day. We especially came early to get drinks with mom in honor of Mother’s Day, and nowhere on the website, reservation booking, social media, signs, etc. did the restaurant state that happy hour would not be in effect for the Holiday.
Our second disappointment and why I gave only 4 stars was because our Hibachi Chef was really not exciting. Out of all the Hibachi places I’ve been, this was whomp whomp, kind of sad. He went so quickly without much interaction, no singing, no throwing utensils or the egg, the onion volcano tower was over before I could even take a photo (!!), the guy who urinates saki/water was quickly spritzed and then immediately put away. He seemed like he was trying to rush and didn’t really care if we were entertained or not.
I understand that maybe the restaurant was busy and they were trying to move things along, but at least try and pretend you’re happy and give us something, we are indeed paying for an experience… I’m not sure where else you’d pay $28 for rice, veggies and a chicken breast without expecting some monies worth.
I’d go again in hopes for better, but since the food is good, it may be better to just sit in the regular part of the restaurant and order food, rather than be disappointed from expectation.
