The Black Cod ($19) was the highlight: buttery and perfectly cooked (small, but expected).
The Sakura Don ($55) was severely overpriced. The advertised “chopped toro” was actually akami (a leaner, lower-grade tuna), easily identifiable by oxidation and tendons. While the ikura was pleasantly al dente, the uni was good as expected, and it included two sweet shrimp—the quality of tuna served means I would realistically expect to pay $26-$35 at a similar establishment—making the $55 price tag unacceptable.
The Angus Dish ($23) was ruined by poor execution. It was placed directly under a piece of canned pineapple, making the entire dish overwhelmingly sweet and unbalanced.
Overall: The food was acceptable, but the use of lower-grade ingredients (akami substitution) and basic execution errors made the experience disappointing and disproportionate to the high cost.
The raw fish here is very fresh, and well worth the price. The fish melts in your mouth.
Got my young daughter 1 salmon sushi, her first time trying raw sushi. She really liked it!
The staff did not complain or show displeasure for me ordering 1 for her. (Didn’t take pic of it, but it was very fresh and a good size.)
We got other dishes and they were all very well presented. The sushi rice was very soft and did not hold shape though, every piece was falling apart. I ended up cutting my sushi in half, so the rice ball was smaller and wouldn’t crumble apart. The aburi had onion for a bit of spicy kick, but I wish it was made into a spicy sauce, as it felt a bit lacking in flavour.
Aside from that, we had a good time.
Took my daughter to the washroom to wash her hands. Washroom was clean.
Are we supposed to scoop the don with our hands???
This is not the first time this has happened from Hana don but this will be the last time we will order anything from them. I understand restaurants want to cut cost, but if you want to cheap out on couple quarter worth of chop sticks and soya sauce then you have to rethink your business model and operation.
There’s many other Japanese restaurants and this one won’t be missed.
The soft green tea matcha wasn’t as flavourful as I’ve had elsewhere.
Overall, great atmosphere, unique menu options, service is great and food was delicious.
Hana Don is a truly exceptional Japanese restaurant that you should definitely book ahead for, as it’s a very busy place. The quality and presentation of the food are the main premises here, and they certainly deliver.
My meal started with a wonderfully soothing miso soup and a unique crab cracker with a fun, sushiesque vibe. For the main course, our group tried several dishes. The Aburi Don with mixed tempura was a standout—the seafood was super fresh and melted in your mouth, while the tempura was perfectly crunchy. I ordered the Karaage Oyako Don, which was a really good blend of juicy, fresh chicken, egg, and rice. The Chicken Katsu Don was also perfect.
We also enjoyed some fresh nigiri, with the freshwater eel being the best I’ve ever had, along with a delicious dynamite roll to finish. While the service could be improved with a little more politeness, the outstanding quality and presentation of every dish completely overshadow any minor issues. This is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic and high-quality Japanese cuisine.
What made it worse was the food. The sushi did not taste fresh, and after eating there, I ended up with diarrhea and stomach pain. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant, especially one serving raw fish. Food safety should be a top priority, but it clearly was not in this case.
I will definitely not be coming back, and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Very disappointing experience overall.
Multiple people in the reviews got food poisoning.
I gave 2 x $100 bills and asked for change. They returned with two $10 dollar bills and a few quarters which doesn’t give the change needed. Cashier lady and waiter gave looks as if I shouldn’t ask for change. Still gave them 10% tips despite poor attitude.
Matcha ice-cream blend and no taste. Overall high price that doesn’t match food quality and subpar customer service.
Food : 8/10⭐
This time I ordered the aburi don. It was delicious. The ingredients went extremely well with each other. Though the ingredients went well together, the proportions of each ingredient wasn’t as perfect as the taste of the mixed foods itself. The bowl mostly (about 66%) consists of rice. The amount of rice hides the flavour of the other foods, which didn’t really give me a full taste of the dish.
Service: 10/10⭐
The service was really nice. The waitresses were super friendly and went out of their way to compliment us and try to get to know us.
Atmosphere : 8/10⭐
Nothing bad can be said about the atmosphere.
Overall rating: 8.66/10⭐
As mentioned previously, I left, this time, wanting to come back.
