Some highlights for our group were the A5 wagyu, toro, and scallops. The uni toro tartare was good, although the toro-to-chip ratio could have been better. The spicy edamame was salty but addicting. Yellowtail snapper was tasty, but the cut and presentation could be improved.
That said, the salmon was just okay, which was disappointing since our group loves salmon. The ikura was a bit too boozy for my liking. We were also bummed that the seared ika was on the menu but not included in our omakase, and the buri-hara was unavailable even though it’s listed on the all-you-can-eat menu.
Dessert-wise, the green tea cheesecake was the best option. The mochi ice cream tasted like standard grocery-store mochi, and the Japanese sweet potato ice cream was just okay.
Service was friendly, especially from our server Natana, but the restaurant was clearly understaffed with only one waitress and one trainee handling the entire floor. Expect longer wait times for water, refills, and requests. They could definitely use at least two more front-of-house staff members.
Overall, it’s a solid experience for the price, with some great dishes, but there’s room for improvement in consistency and staffing.
As I write, they are offering an All you can eat Omakase dinner that is amazing.
1. The range of fish offered was amazing. Including some Sea Bream!
2. The quality of the fish is AAA+.
3. The owner/operators are right there checking on your order, pouring sake and chatting with customers.
4. The kitchen chefs were exceeding all expectations as well.
Hamano is my new favororite PNW-Portland sushi bar. I really encourage you to try it if you love sushi.
The place is not very large so go early or be prepared for a crowd. It was packed at 5pm when I had dinner!
Service: 11/10
Atmo: 10 /10
We made reservations for NYE dinner–it was full the whole time–yet those two ladies worked the floor like pros. The kitchen was short-staffed but paced each dish perfectly. I loved the selections and flavors, even getting to try a few new dishes. Best chawanmushi I’ve ever had, even in Japan. Most dishes were delicious but not the best I’ve had. I was really surprised by how unimpressed I was with the wagyu. I didn’t have a bad dish and wished I could have kept eating. The salmon was great, uni was buttery, the udon was chewy. I wish the tasty unagi don would have been warm. It was really delicious. The green tea cheese cake was a perfect ending.
The service was great in every way: friendly, there when we needed them without hovering, water was always topped off and needs never went unmet.
The space was tiny but beautiful. I rarely find a place that’s taken so much of the aesthetic into consideration.
The Osaka roll comes with takoyaki in the middle and seems like an interesting idea, however the takoyaki flavor completely overpowers the eels and tempura shrimp, so it’s almost like just eating takoyaki.
The miso soup and seaweed salad were ok.
The service was very slow – although they are very responsive when we flag them. When we got the seat the waitress said we only have an hour or so because there’s a reservation afterwards; we were in a hurry anyway so that was ok. However, it took maybe 10 minutes to get our order in, 20 minutes to get our rolls, and only 10 minutes for us to eat. Granted there was one big table, but I think it could have been coordinated better.
Service was friendly and informative. Reservations strongly recommended.
