I think this was a good one time experience. It is AYCE so perhaps the $100 pp is justified. The omakase was alright. It came with a sake pairing and they were quite generous. The staff was super efficient and very tentative. Everything came out pretty quickly. I enjoyed the ratio of rice to fish. Also wish they had asked whether we were okay with sitting at the high tops.

Hamono Sushi offers a great value for the price, especially with the unique combination of omakase and all-you-can-eat.

Some highlights for our group were the A5 wagyu, toro, and scallops. The uni toro tartare was good, although the toro-to-chip ratio could have been better. The spicy edamame was salty but addicting. Yellowtail snapper was tasty, but the cut and presentation could be improved.

That said, the salmon was just okay, which was disappointing since our group loves salmon. The ikura was a bit too boozy for my liking. We were also bummed that the seared ika was on the menu but not included in our omakase, and the buri-hara was unavailable even though it’s listed on the all-you-can-eat menu.

Dessert-wise, the green tea cheesecake was the best option. The mochi ice cream tasted like standard grocery-store mochi, and the Japanese sweet potato ice cream was just okay.

Service was friendly, especially from our server Natana, but the restaurant was clearly understaffed with only one waitress and one trainee handling the entire floor. Expect longer wait times for water, refills, and requests. They could definitely use at least two more front-of-house staff members.

Overall, it’s a solid experience for the price, with some great dishes, but there’s room for improvement in consistency and staffing.

Whoa Portland! This is the best sushi experience I’ve had in years. That’s right years!
As I write, they are offering an All you can eat Omakase dinner that is amazing.
1. The range of fish offered was amazing. Including some Sea Bream!
2. The quality of the fish is AAA+.
3. The owner/operators are right there checking on your order, pouring sake and chatting with customers.
4. The kitchen chefs were exceeding all expectations as well.

Hamano is my new favororite PNW-Portland sushi bar. I really encourage you to try it if you love sushi.
The place is not very large so go early or be prepared for a crowd. It was packed at 5pm when I had dinner!

Food: 10/10
Service: 11/10

We made reservations for NYE dinner–it was full the whole time–yet those two ladies worked the floor like pros. The kitchen was short-staffed but paced each dish perfectly. I loved the selections and flavors, even getting to try a few new dishes. Best chawanmushi I’ve ever had, even in Japan. Most dishes were delicious but not the best I’ve had. I was really surprised by how unimpressed I was with the wagyu. I didn’t have a bad dish and wished I could have kept eating. The salmon was great, uni was buttery, the udon was chewy. I wish the tasty unagi don would have been warm. It was really delicious. The green tea cheese cake was a perfect ending.

The service was great in every way: friendly, there when we needed them without hovering, water was always topped off and needs never went unmet.

The space was tiny but beautiful. I rarely find a place that’s taken so much of the aesthetic into consideration.

Oh wow. Fresh fresh fish. Friendly service. Intimate atmosphere. Did I mention how fresh the fish is? The omakase is very nigiri focused. Which is ok as the king salmon, wagyu, hamachi, toro, Hawaiian Kanpachi, and uni were all amazing. I mean, really amazing. We didn’t taste “fishy” all night. The rice in the nigiri is just “ok” but the fish on top makes that mostly irrelevant (its easy to turn your nigiri into sashimi….). Highly recommend. This was our first time here, and we have eaten sushi all over the world. We will definitely be back. Get the king salmon, the toro, the wagyu, and the hamachi jalapeño.

Wow what a find! First off, the all you can eat omakse is by online reservation only and so worth it. If you miss that, you can order a 5 or 10 piece omakse at anytime. The A5 wagyu was amazing, as was the salmon belly, scallops, yellow fin, etc. The rolls shouldn’t be missed, either! Super authentic, perfect for that special celebration.

The galaxy roll comes with soft shell crab inside, the tempura was still warm when served, which was nice. The citrusy sauce is quite forward so I would recommend dipping soy sauce to complement. My problem is with the fish on top, which were not decent pieces but more like scrap pieces. I guess for the price it’s ok.

The Osaka roll comes with takoyaki in the middle and seems like an interesting idea, however the takoyaki flavor completely overpowers the eels and tempura shrimp, so it’s almost like just eating takoyaki.

The miso soup and seaweed salad were ok.

The service was very slow – although they are very responsive when we flag them. When we got the seat the waitress said we only have an hour or so because there’s a reservation afterwards; we were in a hurry anyway so that was ok. However, it took maybe 10 minutes to get our order in, 20 minutes to get our rolls, and only 10 minutes for us to eat. Granted there was one big table, but I think it could have been coordinated better.

Wait, all you can eat premium omakase sushi for $100 in Portland? Yes, please! After opening the meal with crab miso soup, the first 13 pieces chosen by Chef Jamie were well prepared and presented. Then a comforting chawanmushi, before the flood gates were open for AYCE. My favorites were king salmon and toro nigiri, and the toro roll and uni toro hand rolls (limit 2). Also included are three pours of saké and dessert!

Service was friendly and informative. Reservations strongly recommended.

A new favorite spot for endless amounts of nigiri Quality was so good. I still can’t believe they offer an AYCE Omakase, so I’ll definitely be coming here more often. The staff and chefs are sooo nice and accommodating. Also, some of the best sushi rice I’ve ever had. Truly the best consistency and flavor. Will definitely be back!

We came for the AYCE omakase but we were walk in and it’s unfortunately reservation only. However, the a-la carte items are still great. Would highly recommend the premium hamono don!
