I visited after watching Tablo’s YouTube video, and the vibe was great. Since I went around 6 p.m. on a weekday, there was no line and I could get my food right away. Parking is street parking in the surrounding neighborhood, so you’ll need to find a spot nearby.

The burger was good—worth trying at least once just to see what their style is like. But for me, the top-tier burgers are still In-N-Out and Shake Shack.

Second visit!
If you’re a true foodie with a refined palate, you’re going to love this place. But if you’re just into heavy, greasy, classic American-style calorie bombs, this might not be your spot
The burger has amazing balance, I think its because of the finely chopped onions and pickles inside. Their signature yuzu sauce is super refreshing and adds such a nice twist. The onion rings and fries are extra crispy, the restaurant is spotless, and from the owner to the staff is friendly.
Honestly, there’s no reason not to come here. Out of all the American spots recommended by celebrities, this one’s been the most satisfying!

Came in on a weekday at an odd hour (like 3pm) and was one of two diners sitting at the counter. Ordered a Double Wisconsin. Was a bit surprised by the appearance–a very homely burger. Have to admit, I underestimated it a bit.

It was juicy, sumptuous, sweet, and buttery. Veering on almost too sweet, but it was well complemented by the yuzu hot sauce on the ledge.

The worker that made my burger was very nice in checking up on me politely to make sure I had enough ketchup.

Burger was a bit too small/un-filling for me, and for the price. $15.15 incl. tax for the one burger. I left still hungry, but was at least satisfied by the flavor.

Ambiance might leave a bit to be desired. Very lowkey.

Anyone giving this a 1-star has an obvious issue that’s outside of the food they ate.

The burger is exactly what you expect from a smash (yes, smashed, super thin) burger. Nothing that’s changing your idea of what a burger is (5 stars) but simply hits the spot.

The fries are lack luster. Tastes fine enough, but should be made to order. I agree, need to be crispier.

If out of 10 stars, I’d go with a 7. Rounding up on the 5-star scale because the young lady at the register was friendly.

In a city celebrated for its culinary bravado and innovation, The Hamburger Project stands as a masterclass in restraint, proof that excellence is not always born of excess, but of precision, integrity, and joy in craft. On Divisadero Street, amid the hum of boutique eateries and espresso bars, this unassuming burger counter delivers a level of consistency and soul that rivals fine dining institutions.

Each visit is a reaffirmation of their guiding philosophy: simplicity executed with conviction. The Classic Burger encapsulates this perfectly, a balance of textures and temperatures that feels both nostalgic and refined. The beef patty, freshly ground and perfectly seared, achieves that rare duality of crisp exterior and molten interior. It’s crowned with American cheese that melts to a silken gloss, while diced onions and pickles lend brightness that cuts through the richness. The proprietary HP sauce, a smoky-sweet umami lift, ties it all together with the quiet confidence of a chef who knows flavor doesn’t need spectacle.

The “Oklahoma” Fried Onion Burger offers another layer of artistry. The thinly shaved sweet onions caramelize directly into the beef, creating a lace of golden crispness that fuses texture and aroma into one unified bite. The Peppadew peppers introduce a sweet heat that lingers just long enough to intrigue without overwhelming, a thoughtful contrast against the savory hum of the HP sauce.

Then comes the “Wisconsin” Butter Burger, indulgence distilled into its purest form. The whipped butter seeps gently into the toasted bun, enriching each bite with a velvet warmth that recalls Midwestern tradition yet feels distinctly Californian in its freshness and restraint. Every component, from the pillowy bun to the still-sizzling onions, sings in harmony, unburdened by pretense.

Even the fries deserve mention. Crisp without aggression, they hold their structure under the Loaded Fries’ molten cheese and sautéed onions, draped with HP sauce in a decadent yet balanced crescendo.

And then, the secret sauce, a culinary sleight of hand. It walks the tightrope between tang and savor, amplifying every flavor it touches. It’s not loud; it’s symphonic.

Yet beyond the plate lies something rarer: hospitality with heart. The staff radiate genuine warmth, cheerful, present, and proud of what they serve. There’s an unmistakable energy here, a sense of camaraderie that you can taste. In a city often obsessed with novelty, The Hamburger Project feels like a homecoming, a place where every bite speaks of repetition, refinement, and respect for the craft.

Summary: The Hamburger Project is San Francisco’s quiet masterpiece, a shrine to the humble burger elevated by discipline, heart, and technical grace. In its modest setting, it achieves what many fine dining rooms attempt and fail: perfection without pretense.

Service was friendly. I was first in that day and got a seat, but they did fill up quickly. Bathroom was large and clean. I had the Wisconsin single, which was really good. I wasn’t into the fries; they resemble McDonald’s fries (which I also don’t like). I’d either skip the fries or try them loaded in the future. Price was good.

Good neighborhood smash-burger spot. Clean, modern interior. The yuzu hot sauce is also great.

Also a very good value!! 8.89$ for a classic double. 6.89$ for a classic single, and 4$ for fries.

Super solid smashburger on the trendy Divisadero Street.

The menu is simple, the service is fast, the flavor is great. The burger was everything we expected and scratched that smashburger itch we’ve been having!

Dining room is limited so it may be better for a to-go order than dine-in.

I’ve been eagerly waiting for this new burger joint to open, and it exceeded every expectation! The smash burgers are phenomenal – buns were almost inexistent but super tasty and the perfect patties (get the double) that are incredibly juicy and bursting with flavor. The balance of ingredients is spot-on, making every bite unforgettable.

What makes this place even more impressive is that the chef is a Michelin-star sushi master! You can really tell the attention to detail and dedication to quality in every burger. The staff was fantastic – friendly, efficient, and clearly passionate about the food.

This isn’t just a burger joint; it’s a culinary experience. If you love burgers or just great food in general, this is a must-visit spot. I can’t wait to come back! And caviar next time!

This has been on my list for awhile, I’m glad I stopped in! The burgers were delicious (with just a hint of that upscale restaurant vibe) and the price was great. I really enjoyed the loaded fries as they’re a little reminiscent of In-N-Out’s animal style, but I think these are better — the cheese stays gooey and it’s seasoned well with some caramelized onions. (I know all the low ratings on here are because of the old chef who was harassing people online, but the restaurant group did the right thing and let him go.)
