Right on the corner in downtown Tuscaloosa this small chain offers a plethora of seafood options a full bar and a really interesting decor. First off the char grilled oysters are the star. Buttery smokey grilled flavor combined with some of that oyster sea brine is an unbeatable combo. They also offer snow crab claws which we enjoyed in the New Orleans sauce. It is a pity only the claws though. Also a small crab fork would be very helpful for both these dishes. The bar has a few draft beers I think an IPA is the best pairing with many of their spicy offerings. The large interior has upstairs dining plenty of open bar seating and booths to cater to your preference. Prices are higher given it’s seafood several hours from the sea but not outrageous just be prepared. Personally I really enjoyed thought it was worth the dinner experience and would recommend.

Nice place. Crab cakes were good but the food was very salty. Service and southern hospitality are always outstanding.

This was an exceptional experience! Our server, Chris (?) was absolutely fantastic. He was very polite and attentive. Great job on him! The atmosphere is very nice but a little loud for quiet conversation. The food was also very good. The New Orleans Oysters were amazing. The steaks were good, but to me lacked flavor without the Creole sauce. The other items were also very good. Exceptional place for a Father’s Day dinner with the family.

Stopped in for the evening on business and saw this gem across the street from my room at Embassy Suites. The atmosphere was fun and the food was delicious! I sat at the bar and our bartender was immediately attentive. The oysters were wonderful and my Cajun Redfish was on point. I ate the oysters to fast to take pictures. Sorry, I’ll definitely be going back. I’ll upload more pictures. If your gonna be in Tuscaloosa anytime soon, it’s very much worth your time and money!

Oh. My. Gosh. If you’re looking for a great sit down place to eat dinner in Tuscaloosa, this is it. The atmosphere is great, we were seated right away by a friendly hostess and it didn’t take us long to decide what to get even though everything looked awesome. My Aunt got the pink Pearl drink and her friend got the Basil Lemon Martini which they said were excellent. We skipped apps, but for dinner we got seafood stuffed portobello, seafood pot pie, the seafood pasta, and I got the cheesy bacon sauce shrimp grits. Everyone loved their food and I am so happy I got mine. It was so good that I felt rude with how fast I finished it! But what made the night was how nice and attentive our waiter Jonathan M was. Truly an awesome guy and great waiter. In out next trip to Tuscaloosa, we will be sure to stop here!

Tuscaloosa Al. What’s up? What a way to serve a 1st time customer. In my book, 1st time impressions are everything! “The Oyster House” to me was nothing less than amazing! If you are a seafood person, this is the place for you to enjoy a variety of seafood. I will say one more thing, I enjoyed everything from the food, atmosphere, service, and waitress/waiter. Great place a must try!

Upon our visit to Tuscaloosa Alabama, we wanted to try out local restaurants. When going to Half Shells we were expecting to experience what the locals told us to be a desirable choice of dinning, unfortunately that was not our experience. We placed an appetizer order and 20 minutes later we placed our main dish orders. At the time we ordered the main dishes the appetizer still had not been delivered. When our dinner salads had been served (menus side order choice for meal) we still had not received our appetizer order. Our server noticed that we had not received our appetizer and said she would go put in the order in again. We told her not to worry about it and just cancel it. Thereafter, the manager then came by to apologizes, to which she seemed sincere about. At that time, I explained that in addition to our appetizer order not having been put in by the wait staff the salad lettuce was wilted, as if it had been sitting in the hot kitchen for the extended duration of time that we had been waiting for it. I honestly thought the manager was trying to remedy the situation when apologizing. After which She offered to comp our meal, yet I personally was not comfortable with that as we are not free loaders, and I told her she would need to discuss the matter with my husband. Her response was “at least let me take care of your beverages.” I again asked her to please discuss the matter with my husband as I did not want to give the impression of seeking a free meal. Being that my husband had stepped away, upon his return she, the manager, had brought fried crab claws saying that it was a peace offering then telling my husband that she would like to comp our meal. My husband said that was fine. When my husband and I finished eating, we again sat waiting for a while before the server returned and my husband asked for the check. The manager never came by to say anything any further. We paid the tab… my husband was even kind enough to have tipped the server and we left. After all of this and the obvious confusion of multiple beverages at once , besides the one that was already served to us, there obviously was a major lack of communication amongst the staff at Half Shells and it is certainly something that should be strengthened. In addition to all of this, when having to use the lady’s restroom, from my own observation, it looked as though someone had been in the middle of cleaning and just gave up, leaving a gallon size bottle of cleaner on its side in front of the sink basins and toilet paper littering all over the floors. Our overall experience of Half shells was not the greatest and I personally would not recommend dining there.
