Half Shell – South End, Charlotte, NC

We’re a local Charlotte team, and we built this place in South End because we wanted a raw bar that felt true. Great oysters (from both coasts).

Bar area when you walk in is very welcoming with a great selection of liquor and cocktails. Dining area is laid out nicely with different seating areas laid out in a way that you don’t feel crowded regardless of your party size. They have a wine menu with recommendations based on the seafood you plan to order. The raw bar selection is fantastic especially when it comes to oysters. They had oysters from NC, CT, ME, CA, and New Brunswick. They serve them with 2 amazing mignonettes. We also shared the spicy lobster tail appetizer that comes with an amazing mustard and butter sauce. People in our group had the hot lobster rolls, tuna nachos, salmons special and halibut special. Each dish was presented very professionally. Lobster rolls are packed with perfectly cooked lobster and a side of drawn butter and a side of thin crispy fries or housemade chips. Chips were some of the best made and seasoned chips I have had. Both fish dishes were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Highly recommended Half Shell to any seafood lover and especially for the oyster lover.

Half Shell made a great first impression during their soft opening. We came around 6pm and the dining room was still fairly quiet, with just a few tables seated and some guests at the bar. The atmosphere felt relaxed, welcoming, and upscale.

Service started off strong—our server greeted us right away, walked us through the specials, and got us started quickly with drinks and small plates. There was a brief lull of about 15 minutes before she returned to take our full order, so pacing could be a bit smoother as they continue to settle in.

We ordered the oyster tasting flight and it was definitely a highlight. The oysters were exceptionally fresh and high quality. It would be even better if the flight came with labels so you can easily tell which variety is which, along with a few extra lemon wedges and basic seasonings like salt and pepper on the table.

The tuna nachos were another standout—super crisp chips and great flavor—though a little more sauce would make the dish even more balanced.

The lobster roll was tasty but leaned a bit heavy on butter, and the split-top bun didn’t hold together very well. A sturdier roll would really elevate the presentation. Fries were excellent and perfectly cooked.

My partner ordered the halibut special over garden vegetables. The flavor was great, but it was slightly overcooked and a bit dry, especially for the higher price point.

Unfortunately, key lime pie wasn’t available yet, so we weren’t able to try dessert.

Overall, the hospitality was genuine and attentive, with staff checking in regularly and an assistant manager stopping by, which was appreciated. With a few small tweaks, Half Shell has the potential to become a standout seafood spot. Just be prepared for upscale pricing.

As New England natives, we are always on the lookout for fresh seafood in NC. We live an hour away, but made the drive to give Half Shell a try – and we will be coming back for sure.

Beautiful interior, professional wait staff, wonderfully curated wine list, delicious signature cocktails, and AMAZING food.

We had the tuna poke nachos to start with. SO GOOD! Fried wonton nacho chips with chunks of fresh tuna & avocado, topped with sliced jalapeños, Sriracha aioli, and unagi sauce.

Hubs had an oyster sampler from the raw bar. Fantastic selection. Served with a traditional mignonette, as well as a spicy Serrano pepper option.

Next up we had the Spicy Little Tails and the Rhode Island Style Calamari. Both were cooked to perfection – tender with a flavorful, light, crispy batter.

Lastly, we ordered the chilled lobster roll and a side of truffle fries. Neither disappointed. Split top bun filled with huge chunks of tender lobster – just like back home.

Hubs stuck with his usual drink, but I ventured into the signature cocktail menu and ordered the Sea Glass. Vodka, lime, and cucumber. Light & refreshing.

Definitely our new favorite for seafood in the Queen city!

Impeccable service. Huge fan of how well laid out the silverware/napkins were. Touching the top of the plate perfectly symmetrical with the rest of the table.

Oysters were probably my highlight. Incredibly fresh.

Spiced Lobster tails and calamari are all fried well with a nice light sauce.

The drinks were all very well balanced.

And the key lime pie was wonderfully made. Most times at restaurants I find the crust to be too thick and or dry. This crust was just how I like it.

Fantastic seafood all around. The lobster roll was rich and satisfying, the poke bowl was fresh and well balanced, and the shrimp cocktail and raw oysters tasted incredibly fresh. The crab cake was also excellent—full of flavor and nicely done. Will definitely be back.

This place is great and probably my favorite new spot in CLT – and for people who don’t eat seafood – I tried the smash burger and it was phenomenal!! Steak frites are also another solid option. Also had an amazing mocktail!!! All in all great experience and delicious – excited to come back!!!

Delicious food and tasty cocktails. Highly recommend the blood orange margarita and the blackberry lime mojito. Our table enjoyed the poke tuna avocado nachos and crab cakes. For those who don’t love seafood, the smash burger and fries were amazing. Will definitely be back soon!

I know very little about oysters and had such a great experience here, you gotta get the Poke Nachos to start (TBH I would probably get it for my entree too ) I got a 6 piece oyster flight and they were great!

Decor in here is stunning, can’t wait to come back when it’s summer and get to sit outside
