The sushi was also good, above par.
The sashimi and beef tataki were delicious, but the ramen and maki very ordinary. We had ordered tuna, but half an hour later were told they had run out.
Despite being a small restaurant, and the two workers were working their socks off, they seemed stretched and stressed. The standard of service was not very high, timely or orderly. Despite reserving and warned we couldn’t be late, no table was ready on arriving. Throughout the meal dirty plates were left on nearby tables stacked up, we sat with our own empty plates in front of us for an hour; food came out piecemeal over two hours, we waited 45 minutes before following up on a forgotten dish that hadn’t arrived. They really needed someone working front of house, let two people get food out quicker in the kitchen.
Had the food been exceptional, you’d have maybe overlooked the service, but the experience was mediocre. It was fine, but a bit of a let down for a birthday dinner. Maybe this is the best Japanese in Edinburgh, but I’d try my luck elsewhere.
On our last visit we decided to try the sake flight and it was presented to us well, with a little card explaining about each drink and the waiter also took his time to discuss with us what our favourite one was which was nice too!
First of all, it’s a family-run restaurant with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, simple, cozy, and you instantly feel at home. The food is absolutely delicious : we’ve never ate gyozas this good in our lives ! The sushi pieces ( sashimi and maki ) are excellent too : big, generous, and top quality, just perfect. Special mention goes to the Japanese katsu curry chicken, which was simply divine!
On top of that, the prices are incredibly reasonable for both the quality and the quantity you get
(And the playlist is great, just like the lovely staff)
Highly recommended, you can go there with your eyes closed!
We went there at 6.30 so we managed to get a table without reservation but i’d suggest to.
The gentleman took time to explain the ingredients of the dish and you can tell everything was lovingly prepared.
So fabulous, I’m tempted to go again tonight. I’m on in town for two nights!!!
