Hakata did not disappoint!
There are so many great options on the menu! We started with Chicken Yakitori, and a few different rolls (I forgot to take pictures ♀️): Ichiro with tempura asparagus and cream cheese inside and smoked salmon on the outside; salmon skin roll and the Las Vegas roll.
For my entree, I enjoyed my Tempura and Salmon combination plate which came with salad, rice, miso soup, grilled teriyaki salmon, and several pieces of tempura including two shrimp.
It was a great dinner.
The chef’s attention to detail really showed, and you could tell how much care went into each dish. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and the staff were so kind — they made my parents feel completely at home even though it was their first time here.
It’s rare to find sushi that delivers both quality and warmth like this. We left smiling and talking about it the whole drive home. Definitely a place I’ll be returning to.
We are regular customers here and eat at Hakata almost every week, which is why this experience was especially disappointing.
My husband and I are Asian and rice eaters, and we immediately noticed that the rice smelled spoiled. At first, I thought it might just be me, but my husband noticed the same issue. We politely asked the server to change the rice, and to her credit, she really tried her best. Unfortunately, even after the replacement, the rice still smelled off.
Because we both have sensitive stomachs and have previously had a serious hospital visit due to food-related issues, we decided not to risk eating it.
What was most upsetting was overhearing kitchen staff say, in Japanese, that they did not care. My husband understands and speaks Japanese, and we have also lived in Japan, so we hold Japanese restaurants to a high standard. Rice may seem basic to some, but it is the foundation of Asian cuisine—especially at a restaurant charging premium prices (around $60 per meal).
Between the food safety concern and the dismissive attitude, this experience fell far below expectations. Unfortunately, this will be the last time we dine here. Eat at your own risk!!!
Ordered sake and was given a weird little flower cup and probably lost 10% of what I paid for over the course of pouring like 20 times into this little thing and spilling out of the cup onto myself if I didn’t drink just right.
Since the food was taking so long, the server brought us complimentary miso soup but neglected to bring anything to eat it with.
Food tasted great, but not great enough to come back.
