Not sure if Hakane is under new ownership since they moved locations, but they have improved for the better. At their last location, I found it overpriced and waiting a long time for food was a common occurrence.
However, now at their new location, I see great improvement! Their menu is refreshed and the inside of the restaurant has a charming vibe. All of the sushi rolls I got were fresh and tasted amazing. Happy to say I can recommend Hakane to my friends and family once again.

As Ojai locals, we loved Hakane at the previous location. Food in the usual Japanese mix – sushi, ramen, teriyaki – done competently. It was close, friendly, and a good time. But, our last two attempts have been dismal failures. Never even got seated. Happened again last night. We rolled into a half full dining room, said table for five, they look at the empty tables – four tops and six tops – and say ‘Sorry, we aren’t set up for 5.’ We say we’re happy to sit five to a four top, just pull up an extra chair. ‘No we can’t do that.’ TBH it’s sort of mind boggling. Never happens anywhere else in town or out of town. OBC, Rotie, Zaidee’s, Rory’s, etc…. luckily, Ojai has a bunch of great, friendly places to eat. We walked over to OBC and were welcomed with open arms and big smiles for a great meal. We’re done with Hakane. When we want Japanese, with two, four, or god forbid – 5 people! – we’ll go to Sakura.

Hakane is a fantastic place with fantastic food. Tucked away in a quiet corner of beautiful and peaceful Ojai, you’ll find a funky little house that’s populated by smooth jazz, sweet sake, sweeter servers (Azlyn is especially magical), and excellent sushi and Japanese cuisine—served up with love at an affordable price. I particularly enjoy the teriyaki beef hot plate here. Delicious! Check out Hakane soon. Thank me later.

Great sushi spot in Ojai. Highly recommend checking it out! It’s just a few minutes down the road from the busy downtown area so it is nice and peaceful. Food was delicious and service was amazing, the waitress and owner were so kind and friendly. Will definitely be back!

Ate here tonight and tried the sashimi plate, Eel, chicken+mushroom skewers, miso soup, gyoza, and their coconut salmon. My favorite dish was definitely the coconut salmon and their sashimi! This place is affordable and delicious. The service could be better. Overall a pleasant experience!

The size of each roll, including the specialty rolls was TINY. Too small to even taste the flavor. In addition, we were charged for “additional” eel sauce when neither of the rolls which traditionally have eel sauce (salmon skin, and eel avocado rolls) did not have any eel sauce on them.
And don’t reply with a response about the increasing price of fish, you are a sushi restaurant, and there are plenty of other restaurants that provide adequate sized rolls.
