Miso soup had a rich umami taste, and contained plenty of tofu chunks/seaweed.
The Spicy Tuna Volcano had a crispy rice exterior with grinded tuna bits on top. Wasn’t a big fan of this. Rice immediately on the outside was crispy, but the rice grains immediately underneath the outermost layer were still soft/slightly gooey which threw me off. Didn’t really like the texture of the tuna on top either.
Fried Cheese Wontons & Pork Gyozas were pretty standard. Takoyaki were done well.
The zucchini were naturally sweet, and we also fancied the sauce they spread on top. On the other hand, the corn with butter was way too salty/greasy. Wished we just got 2 zucchini instead.
The Vancouver Set:
(5/5) Toro Beef (Garlic) – Our favourite cut! Loved the marinade, cut thinly, and was very tender after grilling.
(4/5) Harami Skirt Steak (Shio) – Meat had really good marbling, but maybe because they were served a bit on the thicker side, it was harder to chew through than the toro beef.
(3/5) Pork Belly (Garlic) – OK, but definitely had better-flavoured pork belly before.
The Richmond Set:
(3/5) Premium Sirloin (Shio) – Quite surprised that there was barely any flavour on the pieces we had. Had to dip it in a sweet sauce that was already provided on the table to supplement the lack of taste.
(3.5/5) Pork Shoulder (Garlic) – Not very memorable.
(4/5) Yaki-Shabu Beef (Miso) – Texture was similar to the toro beef, but a little less fatty. Liked this too!
They ran out of vanilla/green tea ice cream, and only had bubble gum/lychee flavour. We chose lychee. Ice cream was icy and artificially sweet. Interesting to find little bits of lychee jelly chunks in it though.
Servers and managers were all very friendly, patient, and helpful. On a busy Saturday, our wait was around 15 min even with a reservation. Overall, dining at Gyu-kaku was a good experience, and would come back again to try their other combos/lunch deals.
Update: I came here a 2nd time and the quality was notably better. Well done!
I generally have good experiences here even if wait time can be long sometime. I just learn to make reservation ahead of time now.
I only ever recalled one bad experience, a few years ago where this one staff kept turning off my grill when I still have raw meat on my table and again when I haven’t grill my s’more yet! She was rather rude and kept walking by, turn off, and left… Without saying anything.
That being said, today’s experience was great.
Food was a bit slow (or I was really hungry, lol) but everything was good. Our host, Perry, was hospitable and efficient. Despite it being really busy today, she always come by to check if everything was good and if we needed more water or tea.
I barely took any photo since I was hungry lol.
On the downside, parking is horrible. They share their parking with other businesses in the complex and we literally drove around in circles for 15 mins waiting for someone to leave so we could park.
