Walk into a Gus’s and you’ll find tattered walls adorned with vintage and local art, beloved soulful classics being played in the background, tables covered in checkerboard, and plates full of what is arguably the best fried chicken in the world. Our chicken, prepared using a recipe developed over 60 years ago by the Bonner family, offers the perfect combination of crispy skin and juicy and tender meat, all while holding just enough spice to let you know it is there. All plates are served with beans and coleslaw, but feel free to substitute with any of the other freshly prepared in-house sides. So yes is this a place you need to come to for fried chicken and amazing food.
The chicken was seasoned perfect . The crispy outside of the chicken was just amazing, and being cooked so perfect with the juicy meat.
The fried green tomatoes and okra was a great appetizer to get those taste buds going. Coloard greens is one of the sides and they truly aren’t bad at all. Mac and cheese was cheesy enough and flavor for sure. The cole slaw complements the hint of spice from the chicken. I did enjoy the flavor of the bake beans as well. So this place is a must return when I can.

Look, you think you have had good chicken but THIS PLACE is THE place for fried chicken! It’s not just dining, it’s an experience. From the music, the environment, the friendly staff and incredible management…it’s all a wonderful experience that will have you checking your calendar to see when you can return ASAP! The chicken is fried to perfection (slight crisp and crunch in the bite that ushers you to the juicy meat) the flavor is on point, the potato salad is delicious, the Mac n cheese made want to cry tears of joy (yes, it’s that good)

Five stars for Gus’ Fried Chicken in Mesa, and that’s only because Google won’t let me give six. My wife ordered the thigh-and-leg plate with greens and slaw. I went with the breast-and-wing combo, also with greens and slaw. We’re mostly keto, so the white bread sat on the plate like a polite guest we weren’t going to acknowledge.
Before the chicken even showed up, the fried green tomatoes came out and nearly stole the whole show. I’d come back just for those. My wife said her unsweetened tea was the best she’s had in years, and my IPA was cold, bold, and exactly what fried chicken wants as a sidekick.
Jovani took care of us all night; attentive, friendly, and the kind of server who somehow appears right when you need something without ever interrupting a conversation.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Gus’, you’ve got us hooked.

Excellent chicken! Got the half order and subbed out the beans and slaw for fries. Chicken slightly spicy but it was awesome. My family had the tenders and they loved them. Pie was also amazing.

Their chicken has the right amount of heat, in my opinion. The spices are enough to wake up your taste buds without setting your tongue on fire.

Great customer service here, but the food was not as good as I hoped for. We ordered chicken wings. Although the chicken was fresh and hot it seemed slightly undercooked., and the macaroni and cheese was not hot. I’m sure had I complained they would have corrected the issue but I was too hungry. The fried pickle Spears were really good. My friend ordered chicken breasts, and the portion impressive.

We recently visited Gus’s Fried Chicken and ordered the chicken strips and they did not disappoint. The breading was spot-on: crisp, golden, and flavorful without being greasy. Each piece was cooked to perfection, moist and tender on the inside with no hint of dryness. The chicken strips were a level 2 on the heat scale, which delivered a nice, gentle kick without overpowering the flavor. The honey mayo dipping sauce was a standout, sweet, tangy, and a perfect complement to the savory chicken.
The seasoned fries were excellent. They were golden, crispy, and well-balanced in flavor. As for the mac and cheese, it was a decent side dish, but not really the type of Mac ‘n cheese I like. I prefer it to have a creamier texture.

I am highly disappointed. I know soul food and this was like someone’s first time cooking soul food. Mac & cheese had absolutely no flavor and greens are labeled collard greens but it’s clear these are turnip greens. And I’m quite sure they are canned Glory greens. The chicken was ok but I’m still shocked at how horrible the side dishes are. Over all waste of $15 bucks!
