Social Profile:

The restaurant is named after a famous condiment used in India. Gunpowder Spice, also known as Idly Podi or Milagai Podi, is not a spice blend but instead a dry chutney. The spice gets its name from its coarse, granular texture and color, which somewhat resembles the gunpowder used in firearms. It is most often eaten with Dosa or steamed rice cakes called Idly. Gunpowder Spice, is a mixture of dal (lentils), seeds, and spices. The blend can vary in heat level, based on the number and types of chilies used. Much like its name also tends to have a slightly smoky flavor profile.

This is an absolutely fantastic restaurant over by LSU on highland. Probably the best Indian food I’ve had in the area, and way better than some of the nearby alternatives. Definitely put this one on your list. I had chicken curry, and the garlic naan is to die for. You won’t be disappointed. Super friendly staff, modern design, good music.

I tried Gunpowder Indian Cuisine tonight after seeing lots of excellent reviews, and it absolutely did not disappoint! The interior is sparsely decorated, but with food like this, who cares?! I started off with a masala tea, because I love black tea, and it was very rich and smooth. I also ordered the vegetable samosas – minced potatoes and peas in a fried pastry dough. It comes with two dipping sauces, and both complimented them wonderfully.
I decided to go with the Mix Grill – a selection of tandoori dishes, instead of a more wet dish like a curry. That will be next time.
It came with tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, shrimp, and lamb sheekh kebab, along with some vegetables and dressings. Each one was cooked perfectly and tender, and delicious. For the spice level, I went with #2 out of 4 and honestly, it wasn’t that spicy. I will probably do number three next time.
The naan bread was the freshest I’ve ever had – it must’ve been baked this morning.
The service was helpful and attentive.
Y’all, give this place a try! The menu is extensive, and there are so many things that I want to try!

What a nice surprise. The dahl was great, and the mutter paneer too and so was the fish curry, I was surprised they had Wings on the menu, maybe for accompanying diners who didn’t like Indian food? And it is the south… There were also noodles and I almost got that egg masala garlic noodles. Every thing was good very good with the dahl being the class of the place. Oh also they had mulligatawny which I didn’t see on the menu but they brought it and it was very good and peppery, not too heavy but substantial enough that it felt like comfort food. I really like the place and the decor was good, and service was good too. I want to go back and try other items

Paneer biryani is good. It was made the way I asked. I didnt like the palak paneer. The paneer tasted fake. The roti was perfect & great white rice. Everything was packaged well so nothing was damaged during delivery. Thank you.

Overall good flavors.

It was my first time dining at this establishment and it was wonderful! The service was quick and the atmosphere was bright and welcoming. The food was the best Indian food I’ve ever had in Baton Rouge; I ordered the chicken tikka masala and my partner ordered the butter chicken. Both were fantastic and delicious. The naan was my favortite part of the dish… it is cooked perfectly and it is SO GOOD!! Overall, a great place with a large menu, so you are bound to find something you like or something new to try.

Our recent visit to **Gunpowder Indian Cuisine near LSU was nothing short of exceptional, delivering one of the most memorable Indian dining experiences in Baton Rouge. From the very first bite, every dish showcased authenticity, balance, and depth of flavor. The gunpowder dosa arrived beautifully crisp, infused with a bold, aromatic spice that instantly impressed us. The chicken 555 was vibrant and flavorful with just the right amount of heat, while the pakoda was perfectly golden and crunchy, offering that comforting, street-style warmth. The mango lassi was silky smooth and refreshingly sweet, providing a lovely contrast to the spices. Among the mains, the chicken korma stood out with its rich, creamy texture and delicate sweetness, while the mutton biryani was deeply aromatic, layered with fragrant spices and tender, perfectly cooked meat. The tandoori chicken had a wonderful smoky char and juicy interior, and the naan bread was soft, warm, and freshly made — ideal for savoring every sauce. However, the true highlight of the meal was the chicken roast, which was absolutely mind-blowing, bursting with robust spices and unforgettable flavor that lingered long after the meal ended. What elevated the entire experience even further was the outstanding service; the staff took the time to thoughtfully explain each dish, describe the flavor profiles, and guide us through the cuisine with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. The restaurant itself was spotless, welcoming, and well-maintained, reflecting their attention to detail in every aspect. Overall, this place excels in food quality, hospitality, and cleanliness, and it easily stands out among Indian restaurants in Baton Rouge. Highly recommended — a well-deserved five-star destination for anyone seeking authentic flavors and an exceptional dining experience.

Stopped by Gunpowder Indian Cuisine, LA on our way to Houston and ordered takeout. The veg fried rice was absolutely delicious — aromatic, flavorful, and perfectly stir-fried with a nice balance of spices. We called about 10 minutes ahead, and the order was almost ready when we arrived, just a little wait.

Also tried their tea, which was fragrant and soothing, the perfect companion for a long drive.
Smooth takeout experience and tasty food — we’ll definitely stop by again next time we’re passing through!
