First and foremost, Vic, our server, was absolutely outstanding. Vic was attentive, warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in making sure we had a great experience.
The pacing was perfect, the recommendations were spot-on, and we never felt rushed or overlooked. Vic is the quintessential kind of server who elevates a meal into a memorable dining experience and is a huge reason we’ll be returning. Vic please keep up the great work.
The Great Sage feels like a true
destination rather than just a place to eat.
The food was phenomenal. I ordered the vegan wrap with sautéed beets, sweet potatoes, and a beautifully balanced blend of spices, paired perfectly with the green aioli- every bite was thoughtful and delicious. My wife had the Beyond Burger, and it was easily one of the best plant-based burgers we’ve ever had.
The Great Sage proves that vegan cuisine can be elevated, comforting, and bold all at once. Between the food, the atmosphere, and especially the exceptional service from Vic, this is a must-visit spot. We’re already looking forward to our second visit.
Thank you so much!!

The fundamental issue is the severe mismatch between pricing and portion size/quality. For a total of $70 for the food, the portions were shockingly meager:
* Crab Cakes: These were laughably small. Each one was barely half the size of my palm and did not even fill the standard small side-item container they came in.
* “Fries”: The side of fries—which were actually more akin to fried potatoes—was not a portion, but a small handful scattered across the bottom of a box.
* Mac & Cheese: The “adult” side of mac & cheese was notably smaller than the children’s portion.
* Incorrect Side: I specifically requested wheat-free pasta as a side substitution for the spinach dip instead of bread, only to receive bread anyway.
When I raised these concerns with the staff, the response was dismissive, essentially stating that these inadequate sizes were standard. This lack of accountability and concern suggests a disregard for customer satisfaction.
It’s clear that the standards and value at Great Sage have changed for the worst.
Customers are the lifeblood of any business, and when loyal patrons are met with a significant reduction in portion size—a direct reflection of value—and poor customer service, the business risks alienating its base. I sincerely doubt I will be returning, as the quality and value no longer justify the price or the time spent.
I first reviewed The Great Sage six years ago, and after moving away, I realize just how special this place truly is. We used to go all the time, and every visit felt like a treat. The food has always been consistently delicious, beautifully plated, and thoughtfully prepared. Their brunch menu and vegan pancakes were favorites of ours, and to this day I still crave their buffalo cauliflower wings, hands down the best I’ve ever had anywhere. Every entrée we tried was flavorful and creative, and I always appreciated that the menu wasn’t stagnant; they’re constantly introducing new dishes, seasonal specials, and now even more exciting desserts. (I peeked at their current menu recently and I’m jealous of everyone who still gets to eat there!)
The staff is kind and accommodating. On the rare occasions something was forgotten, a quick reminder was all it took, they always corrected it graciously and with a smile. As someone sensitive to cashews, I can’t say enough how much I valued their willingness to double-check ingredients with the kitchen rather than guess. That level of care isn’t common, and I’ve learned that the hard way at other restaurants.
For balance, I’ll keep my one consistent critique: the cakes and cupcakes were never my favorite, as they tended to be a bit dry. But honestly, the rest of the menu more than makes up for it, and there are so many other desserts now that I doubt anyone will miss them.
All in all, The Great Sage is one of those rare places that stays with you. I miss it dearly and would recommend it to anyone looking for thoughtful, delicious, plant-based food made with creativity and heart. If we ever move back to Maryland, this will be one of our first stops.
Unfortunately, the Caesar salad was disappointing. The croutons were inedible—hard and stale—making it nearly impossible to enjoy the dish. Left with just a plate of Romaine lettuce and Caesar dressing, I removed the croutons and made the best of it.
I was particularly excited about the adult mac and cheese, as it was the main reason for my visit. However, when it arrived, the top layer was warm, but the inside was ice cold. Given the restaurant was empty and I had ordered while eating the subpar salad, I was shocked. I brought this to the attention of the staff, who promptly took it back to be reheated. When it returned, I was horrified to see what was served: a bowl of vegan cheese sauce with a scant amount of pasta and vegetables on top.
At that point, my patience had worn thin. I asked for the check and declined a to-go box. I’ve ordered the adult mac and cheese from Great Sage many times before, and I’ve never seen it served this way. It tasted like a cheap, overly salted vegan cheese sauce and looked as if it had been prepared by someone with little culinary experience.
Overall, my visit today was highly disappointing. I don’t know if there has been a change in management or chefs, but the quality of the food has significantly declined. My last visit, about three months ago, was also underwhelming, with the spinach artichoke dip tasting sour and poorly presented, which is why I didn’t order it this time.
I hope Great Sage can return to the quality I once enjoyed, as this experience was far from what I expected.
