2nd visit update: amazing! Loved everything and Julie is the best! Tried Mandarin chicken & beef chow foon tonight, so yummy! Cooked fresh, hot, veggies crunchy in all the right ways, noodles were wonderful! Continue to be impressed…. Way better than any buffet food, this is the place for great Chinese food, good quality and prices! Staff are wonderful!

1st visit: Wow! Exceeded my expectations. First time visit, was looking for ‘crappy’ Chinese food (if you know what I mean since our buffet spot closed down)… The food was WAY better than buffet and I was actually super impressed. I had the house chow mein, that was so yummy (you could taste wok-iness). Felt light, not heavy and greasy like typical Chinese. Also shared pork and seeds (classic) and thought their pork fried rice was flavorful and delicious (umaimi!). Julie, our waitress, was delightful! Super nice and great service. Will definitely be back, and I’m totally getting house chow mein again! Craveable!!!

I have never written a review before… but this is the most foul plate of slop i have ever received through takeout. The dumplings were literally the microwaved ones ive purchased from costco, and the beef fried rice was so wet and mushy it mixed together with a fork like mashed potatoes. I will never order from this restaurant again and will tell every single person from here to wyoming stay away.

Best Chinese in Boise, but do not ever ever go on Christmas Eve. It’s is packed. Go the day before or after. We always eat family style and everything gets cleaned up. Service is fantastic, they are on top of it and there are too many favorite dishes to mention.

Our family has been going to Golden Star since it opened. It used to be fantastic. The last 3 times we have gotten food from there it has been horrible. The quality has been horrible, the service even worse and the prices outrageous for what you get. They are so busy with the grubhub and doordash that they have lost sight of the locals that have kept them in business for 60years. To top it off they added their own tip adding and extra $15.00 on top of what was provided. It was take out that we had to go in and order because they wouldn’t answer the phone. Then sit and wait forever while they shuffled out all of the “delivery orders”. Then to get home and have the slop orders be wrong. I am over Golden Star it is not worth the hype and our loyalty to them is lost. Do better Golden Star, the little old lady that would sit up front would be ashamed I’m sure.

I ordered take out through door dash and it was almost twice the regular price, I know door dash jumps prices but come on thats insane. The cashier was extremely rude and impatient and rolled his eyes when I asked my friend to help me with the app (I don’t use door dash often) he also got upset I wasn’t willing to basically shove people out of my way to get to the counter. The food was unbearably mediocre and basically flavorless. Even if the food was incredible I would still not be returning due to that cashier, someone needs to teach him customer support etiquette and patience. Someone who talks and acts like he did to customers shouldn’t be the first face people see. He acted that way to every guest I saw come in.

Golden Star is an awesome classic Chinese restaurant. We ordered family dinner #7 and it did not disappoint. Golden Star has the best BBQ pork i have ever had. I’m excited to try the pot stickers next time, they looked amazing. The service was great. We are new to Boise and we have found our spot for Chinese food.

We really enjoyed our lunch here and will go back! We ordered a bowl of soup and split it; it wasn’t my favorite, but my husband liked it. I ordered Generals chicken – it’s not like the traditional General Tsos, BUT… it’s good. Very crunchy- great breading. The sauce it different but I liked it, very rich flavors! My husband ordered Kung Pao Chicken and it was wonderful!

Fried Rice
Beef & Shrimp Stir-fry
Mandarin Chicken
House Chow Mein

Only item not our favorite was Mandarin Chicken… Sauce was pure vinegar but chicken not covered in sauce was delicious
Was surprised at quality of Beef and Shrimp! Really really high quality & so yummy..
Chow mein was my favorite dish hands down!
Definitely recommend

I grew up in Boise and this place looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid. Always outstanding service, good food. My absolute favorite is the “grilled” halibut which is an unusual find at an old school place like this. Also, either the house chow mein or the special chow mein, whichever has the little noodles — it’s awesome. Highly recommend.
