This is the best Chinese food in Salem. I have had all of them. As you can tell by the number of reviews I’ve left, I am very seasoned. I’ve eaten Chinese food around the country and even in Europe. This is some of the best most cravable Chinese food I have ever had. It reminds me of a time when there was more value restaurant food. The portion size is like the early 2000s. Huge!
The restaurant itself is clean and cute. It reminds me of a normal authentic Chinese food restaurant like you would have experienced decades over. The staff are friendly and warm. When you walk in the entire place, smells like heaven.
If you’re trying to choose the best Chinese food restaurant in the area to pop into, or even just a place to grab a bite, this is the one.

My wife and I have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Salem and a friend of hers recommended the Golden Crown. We came early (around 2 pm) and there was no crowd. The staff was very attentive and the food came quickly and was so DANG good. We are so grateful for that recommendation!!

We will be back for sure in the future. We ordered the Dinner Special (2 person minimum), which included egg-drop soup (excellent), 2 appetizers and 5 entrees. Everything was well-prepared, with very generous portions, and very tasty. We ended up bringing home two big take out boxes, which we look forward to enjoying later.

Everything was excellent. The staff was very friendly and we discovered that the Golden Crown is family owned and has been at this location for over 50 years and while the current owners are not the originals, they have kept many of the long-term chefs, who really do a super job. The decor, while clean and neat, looks like the decorations of several years ago, which added to the quaintness of the ambience.

For good Chinese food, you can’t go wrong in eating at the Golden Crown. 🙂

Used to be so good. Not anymore. Ordered 2 combo dinners tonight. The chow mein was so so. The egg foo young was not cooked completely. The shrimp was not fresh battered . It was prebreaded flat frozen shrimp. Totally disappointing. Had been a customer for over 30 years. Will not go back.

First-time here and it didn’t disappoint. The food was very good, fresh, hot and they serve you lots of food for the price. Well worth it.
The servers were nice.
The atmosphere was quite, inviting and clean. I highly recommend

This place was something to remember. The booths were extra sticky. The table top stuck to my forearms… all of the condiments, sitting on top of it, were also extra sticky. We ordered crap puffs and a combination D dinner.

They brought us egg drop soup and it was very good. My dining partner did ask if he could have hot and sour soup and was told no because that was extra. This was the first time we have visited an Asian restaurant and not been able to have either soup with a combination meal.

The crab puffs were big, but they did not have any of that fake crab in them. It was all cream cheese, and zero seasoning.

The appetizer plate was fried shrimp and barbecue pork. The fried shrimp was fine but the barbecue pork was dry and tasteless. It was really bad.

Next came the Mandarin chicken, which was a delight. It was actually really good, but it was not mandarin at all. It was more of the sweet-and-sour sauce that came with the crab puffs just poured on top. It was a big portion and our favorite thing that was brought to the table.

The fried rice was also pretty good. It had big chunks of what looked to be frozen peas and carrots in it and it well seasoned.

They brought us something called Cantonese steak and it was 100% not steak I could not physically chew through it, so I cannot tell you how it tasted because it was too tough to eat.

There was a vegetable dish that was good. It had normal vegetables, but they were also too big to eat in one bite, and we weren’t given knives to cut these vegetables to eat them. It was also covered in more of that nasty barbecue pork.

The service was great. Everybody was really nice. The bathroom was mostly clean, but if you do go and visit, please look up to the ceiling because by the look of their vent, it has not been cleaned in half a century. It was gross.

I probably will not return to this restaurant, because there are so many other places that make better food in my opinion. If you’re looking for quantity over quality, however this place gives you a ton of food. There’s not a lot of parking, but there’s a sees candy store next-door if you come out looking for something sweet.

Confusing presentation and preparation— containers of fried chicken with no sauce. Went all the way back and it’s guess how they have it on the menu? But I have never had sesame chicken that is dry and has no sauce. Staff are friendly and in some ways, not having a menu item be what you expect is just a personal thing, but the food just was not good. I spent almost $50 and didn’t feel like I could eat a single thing, which is a bad feeling. Fried rice is just that— fried rice without a single veggie or other ingredient added besides egg. If you’re looking for those classic menu items you’re gonna be disappointed.

Also the male owner was yelling at woman working— very uncomfortable to witness as a customer. Would not recommend!!

The best war wonton soup! Enough to share and have leftovers. When you order take out, they package the broth so the veggies and wontons for the best meal at home! One of the few restaurants in town that offer Chow Fun! And it is wonderful.
I had heard they recently changed hands, the store had kind of gotten run down. Pandemic didn’t do downtown Salem any favors.
The new owners have cleaned the restaurant up and it’s much better!
The chefs are the same.
After rediscovering them a few months ago, it has returned to one favorite downtown restaurants. Parking in back makes it easy to get my elderly mom into the restaurant.
