Grabbed some takeout from Girassol. Had the cod fish cakes, sold individually. Thought they were pretty good. Had the Bacalhua a Bras and thought it was good as well, not too salty and drizzled with olive oil. For dessert, I went with the doce da casa. Thought it was very good. The wife had the Junior Steak and would try something else next time.

Arrived in this neighbor for some errands and tried the cafe. Very difficult to find as the door is not obvious for tourists or non residents. Street parking and it takes time for the food to arrive. Clean environment and bathrooms. Portuguese soup very tasty and so is the Portuguese bread. We tried both grilled chicken over lettuce and seafood mix with rice. Both are fantastic. Mussels little neck clams and scallops wonderfully prepared. It’s a hidden gem of new Bedford.

I have gone there 4 times with my husband and another couple just in the past 6 months. We find the food delicious, abundant and affordable. The Pork Alentejana-style with little necks are the best in town. We have never had a bad experience. The service is excellent and the owner always goes around to each table greeting and asking if everything is ok.

I’d have passed this one by completely, had it not been for a rave from another restaurant owner. He told me that, of all the restaurants in the area, Girassol’s was where he ate (other than his own place, of course). When I asked why, I was told that “This is the food of my home in St Michael’s”.
With praise like this coming from the owner of one of my area favorites, I had to check it out.
So, I went to dinner one night, on my own, to experience it. In all honesty, I thought I was in the wrong place. This is not a fancy restaurant; more of a bar with a room where you can eat.
The quality of the food and the service removed any thoughts I had of questioning his recommendation. Everything was fresh, tasty and the restaurant itself looked clean. It’s hard to fault any of that.
Lessons learned: Always try to get to know the owners of your favorites and don’t be afraid to ask them where they eat when they go out. Don’t judge a restaurant by the way it looks, unless it looks unsanitary. You could miss out on a hidden gem.

Delicious Portuguese food at a very good price. Staff is super friendly, plate sizes are huge so be ready to take food home. They always have specials.

Restaurant Girasol was highly recommended by a good friend. I could not resist to confirm her affirmations of the quality, variety and friendless of the employee and the owner himself who came to greet us. The portions are more than sufficient to satisfy a famished soul. The dessert we chose torta de feijao (bean tart) was homemade and excellent.
