Every year we stop through Walsenburg, and every year we’ve tried a different restaurant—always leaving disappointed. That all changed when we finally pulled into George’s Drive-Inn. If you’re hungry and driving through town, let me save you the trial and error: this is the spot.
Right away, George’s sets itself apart. There’s ample parking, which is a huge plus if you’re driving a larger vehicle or even pulling a trailer. The outside has that classic, old-school diner look—not flashy, but nostalgic in the best way. Inside, it’s clean, inviting, and filled with locals (while neighboring restaurants sat mostly empty… which speaks volumes). The staff was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, giving the place a true small-town charm that you can’t fake.
We decided to sit outside at the picnic tables—another great option when the weather’s nice. For food, I went with the Reuben sandwich and onion rings. Let me just say, this was hands-down the best Reuben I’ve had in a long time. The corned beef was sliced paper thin with just the right char, giving it incredible texture and flavor. The sauerkraut had that perfect tang, and the bread was toasted to perfection—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The onion rings were equally impressive: perfectly breaded, not greasy, and had that satisfying crunch that tells you they’re done right.
My companions ordered the Corned Beef and the Mexican Burger, and both left extremely happy. The portions were generous, the flavors were spot on, and you could tell everything was cooked with care.
My only regret? That I haven’t eaten here sooner. After years of mediocre meals passing through Walsenburg, we’ve finally found the gem. George’s Drive-Inn has earned a permanent spot on our travel map.
If you’re hungry and just passing through Walsenburg, CO—skip the guessing game. Make George’s your first stop.

Great food, even better staff. If you’re thinking about the fast food joints nearby—DONT. Go to George’s Drive Inn. You’ll be met with fast service, lovely food, and unreasonable hospitality.
Just a stop on our road trip, but we’re marking it down to come back next year.

We stopped on our way to Wyoming from Argentina. Food was great (we ordered the fish platter) and the waitress was very kind and understanding. Safe to say the best place we’ve eaten at so far.

We have been coming here for over 30 years. The food is always so good and tastes homemade. Breakfast is our favorite, but their burgers at lunch are also delicious. If you’re traveling through, definitely check them out.

Amazing hometown diner with delicious food and service. Definitely lean into the burger side of the menu although everything that came out of that tiny kitchen looked and smelled wonderful (yes we gawked at other people’s plates and said ‘that looks so good!’). I had the larger size burger and ordered a side of fries. OMG! Real potatoes, crispy outside, creamy inside and yummy. Burger had the special crispy edge that comes from being squished down on the hot flat top grill, soft bun, fresh lettuce and generous slice of ripe tomato- yum! Hubby had the patty melt with the optional grilled onions – do not pass those up! The melty slightly charred flavor and texture of the onions worked perfectly with the crispy marble rye and, once again, that monster size burger patty. Service was fast and courteous (pay at the register on your way out) and this was a busy lunch time. You can tell the locals love this place as the servers knew many folks by name. Great place to stop on the way – easy on and off the highway and plenty of parking. Oh, and the whole place including the restrooms was spotlessly clean.

Skip the big chain KFC/Taco Bell at this exit. We thought about a bucket of chicken, but fast food restaurants don’t like their customers anymore and think that we are suckers. George’s is local, run by local staff, who were all very kind and all smiles, and the food was better. Highly recommend the Philly Cheesesteak. It was delicious. My kid’s fries were also hand cut and perfectly cooked; the onion rings were good, too. We also spent less than we would have at KFC. Thanks George’s for being local and feeding my family of five.

Excellent red and green chili, fries burgers and hot dogs. The BLT was very good. Will be back to try the steak sandwich. The Lemon Merang is excellent. Service friendly and expeditious. Atmosphere casual. It is a walk in sit down place, but it is worth walking in and sitting down.

George’s is just one of those places that’s hard to beat. I usually stop when I’m by myself but have also brought my family, and they love it as well. The smothered chili burger with green is my go-to plate. The jumbo cheeseburgers don’t get much better. I go at 1 pm or later because the lunch hour is always super busy. Today at 1 pm, I had to wait for a seat. Orders are always taken pretty quickly, and it never takes more than 15 minutes to get your food. Staff is always friendly. The soft serve ice cream is always a hit.

OK, 5 Stars for sure! Stopped here for lunch on our way down to ride the Cumbres-Toltec Scenic Railway, and it was so darn delicious that we stopped here again on our way back to Colorado Springs. Honestly, no wonder the locals love the food here and it has been a local staple for 50 years. Exceptional and fast customer service, best homemade food, and special orders do not upset them. 5 Thumbs Up for George’s Cafe!
