Came here with a friend on a busy night and managed to get seated immediately (which is good because people behind us started getting put on a wait list).
While we got seated and greeted immediately we did end up waiting almost 20 minutes before our waiter came back to take our orders. Once we got our food order service was much smoother with dishes coming out pretty quickly. Though pacing was a bit off as our entrees came out before the last of our appetizers.
The nigiri was excellent and the skewers plate was also delicious. The hand roll was good but much smaller than I’ve come to expect from a “hand roll”. The entrees were both…fine. Compared to the starters and sushi they were a little underwhelming. I found the the spicy miso ramen to be a little sour (?) not in a way that ruined the dish but definitely a little off-putting. Also they forgot my tea initially (though they comp’d it when it did arrive).
The interior decor is spot on and feels very cozy but they could use a second set of doors up front because we were getting blasted by a draft all night.
Ultimately I’d come back for sushi and appetizers (all of which were excellent) but might skip the noodle and rice dishes, and might ask to be seated a little further away from the doors.

My recent visit to Genki Izakaya was truly exceptional, and I can’t recommend it enough. From start to finish, the experience was a solid 5 out of 5 stars.
Our server, Nancy, was absolutely fantastic. She was attentive, and friendly. She made us feel right at home and elevated the entire dining experience.
The food was the real highlight. The Tornado Omelet Fried Rice is an absolute must-try—it’s as delicious as it is visually impressive. For an appetizer, the Ube Fries were a total standout. The unique flavor and perfect crispiness made them a surprising and memorable start to the meal.
To top it all off, the bartender crafted a very nice Old Fashioned. It was perfectly balanced and a great complement to our meal.
If you’re looking for amazing food, incredible service, and a great atmosphere, Genki Izakaya is the place to go. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Overall, I had a great experience at Genki Sushi in VA. The restaurant was clean and tidy, with a well-executed Japanese style. Watching the chefs prepare the sushi at the counter added to my confidence. The sushi ingredients were fresh; the salmon and tuna were thickly sliced and had a delicate texture. I recommend their seared salmon and tomato roll, which had a rich and complex flavor. The service was friendly, and the food came out relatively quickly. The prices are on the higher end for the area, but considering the quality of the ingredients and the atmosphere, I think it’s worth the price. It’s suitable for couples, small gatherings with friends, or a relaxing weekday meal. In short, it’s a sushi restaurant worth revisiting.

This is my second time at Genki, and their food is so good! I really enjoy the blue fin tuna foie gras with uni. It literally melts in your mouth. It’s a must try, but it is quite pricey ($34). The atmosphere here is very cozy and well decorated. Our waitress, Sabrina, was attentive and easygoing as well which made the experience nice.

This is the second time my husband and I go here. My husband took me once for date night and we fell in love with everything. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent. Since the first time we went we haven’t stopped recommending this place to everyone we know. Tonight 1/17/26 we went with friends who have never been there and they loved it too! They said they would be back. Can’t wait to go again! Already planning another date night soon. By far my favorite place to eat from now on.

We stopped in for skewers and ramen, and Sabrina made the whole meal even better. She was warm, attentive, and super knowledgeable about the menu — her recommendations were spot on.
The skewers came out perfectly grilled, and the ramen was rich, flavorful, and beautifully plated. The broth was amazing, the meat tender, and the toppings were fresh. You can really taste the quality here.
Sabrina checked on us just enough, without ever feeling rushed, and made us feel truly welcome. Great service + great food = definitely coming back. If you visit Genki, hope you get Sabrina — she really made it memorable!

Excellent dinner at Genki Izakaya. The grilled skewers were perfectly cooked with great char and seasoning, especially the pork belly and beef which were juicy, smoky, and full of flavor. The seafood dishes were equally impressive with very fresh sashimi and a light, well balanced sauce. Presentation was beautiful and showed real attention to detail. Service was friendly and smooth, and the atmosphere felt modern yet cozy. Definitely a place I would come back to again.

We drove 3 hours to visit this place for my birthday dinner, and when I tell you it was worth the hike, I’m not joking. The atmosphere is like stepping through a portal to Japan, but the food… oh my goodness. We started with the Yakitori platter, which was perfectly grilled and well seasoned. Then we had the sashimi sampler– the Yellowtail tuna literally melts in your mouth! The fish is so fresh, and of high quality. For entrees, I had the Unagi Don and my husband had the Yaki Udon. He says it’s the best udon he has ever had, and I’m inclined to agree. We also ordered another round of tuna sashimi, and Okonomiyaki. Incredibly tasty. For drinks, I had a Peach Chu Hi… dangerously delicious!… and a Shinobi Mist, which was light and airy and sweet and floral all in one.
Our server, Nancy, was so sweet and attentive!
Literally, this place is an incredible little gem. Best birthday dinner EVER.

This is the second time here and I brought my niece who loves nigiri and sushi rolls. As always the food was excellent and Sabrina our waiter did a fantastic job explaining menu to family who were trying Japanese food for the first time. The service was fast and couldn’t have asked for a better experience

A great place to enjoy Japanese food and atmosphere without traveling to Japan. I visited with friends for a casual meal and drinks, and we were very satisfied with the experience.
The food was well prepared, and the presentation clearly showed a lot of care and attention to detail. Each dish was enjoyable to receive and added to the overall dining experience. It was a relaxed and pleasant spot to share food, drinks, and conversation with friends.
