Home town cooking with fresh ingredients for 90% of the food not being premade. Bathroom was clean and loved Kim for our server. Love the shrimp salad and the beets are delicious.

This place was great and should be preserved like a museum for bars that don’t exist much more. However, the tuna salad was the most horrific food I’ve ever had in a bar. It was runny like cucumber salad with too much Mayonnaise and???? it was literally running off the bread onto the plate. I’ve never seen anything so horrifically, not a tuna fish sandwhich in my life. Other han that great place, crazy atmosphere.I expect to go back in the summertime to see lots of bikers like myself BUT I won’t be eating.

A few friends and I stopped in after hiking at the state park nearby for some lunch, and I think we made a great choice! This is a no-frills, laid-back diner (so don’t expect anything super fancy or cushy) that concentrates its efforts on their food. The crab dip we ordered came with the perfect amount of soft pretzel bread and some saltine crackers, and their cheesesteaks were huge and delicious (both pictured)! Coming from the city, you definitely get a lot more food for what you pay, and everything we tried was well worth it. The staff and other patrons were all very friendly and gave great recommendations. Will definitely stop by again when I’m in the area!

The food was good and fast. Very traditional menu. The burger was the best!

Typical dive bar & restaurant with attention to good food, large portions, and that’s about it. Had the cheeseburger club, which was solid and some nicely prepared onion rings. Not much of an atmosphere, and a little bit of a fly problem at my table. The late owner Gene Poe and his family are distant relatives of Edgar Allan Poe, and there are a few signs on the wall as testament to that relationship.

Crab melt and tater tots. Love this place. Not many places left like this. Not a chain. Good old fashion mom and pop type please. Let’s keep these type of establishments going!

Run-A-Way Bill
Forest Hill, Maryland —

“Gene’s” is an interesting accidental bar find …

customers were not the “hi, how ya’ doin’
kinda customers & bartender Julie, although not overly “welcoming”, she did smile & interact with the local regulars …

the bar is basic with “some” bar flair, plus an attached dinning area & take-out liquor store …

the highlight was the enormous menu selections, including pit beef, ham & turkey; pizza; burgers; gravy covered turkey, beef or meat loaf; plus salads of tuna, shrimp, & chicken; crab cakes; plus …

breakfast menu included in morning untill 11am …

Forest Hill, Maryland –

“Run-A-Way Bill” FAVORITE bartender “Julie” (aka “Jules”) of “Gene’s” (aka “Gene Poe’s”) keeps serving up customer smiles …

“Gene’s” is the newest “Coon Trap” bar of “Run-A-Way Bill” (a bar that has me trapped & I can’t escape) …

in addition to interactive customers & super bartender “Julie”, menu items like pit beef/turkey/ham on weekends & home-made shrimp salad anytime will keep me coming back …

since the late 60’s “Gene’s” is a local favorite

“Run-A-Way Bill” was here! (AGAIN!)

My husband and I absolutely love coming to Gene Poe’s on Saturday night for dinner and drinks. Lisa is always on point with getting orders submitted, filling up my husband’s glass and making drinks for everyone. She just stays on top of it for everyone, doesn’t matter if you’re a regular or a newcomer. She makes sure your taken care of.
The food (we get the flat iron steak almost every Saturday night we go) has been amazing 99% of the time we’ve gone.
We also go for breakfast Sunday mornings frequently. Breakfast service and food is also amazing.
I recommend to everyone who’s new to the area or looking for a place to eat to come to Gene Poe’s (Poe’s). Absolutely awesome community filled restaurant & bar.

Ok..so my friends from work live in Jarretsville and recommended Genes. I live by rustic taverns and what not so my wife and I jumped on the bike amd took a ride uo there. It was beautifull out. We had a bloody mary and what not and moved to the dining area. Waitress was very polite and attentive. I had the 16 oz Ribeye..doubke mash..
Dauteed mushrooms, bowl of Md crab. Wife…cup of same and soft crab sandwich, potato salad a macoroni salad. Asked if the salads were homemade and a yes for both..mac was store bought. Soft crab had no legs and no claws…lol. it was a premade store bought disaster. I swear..when we pulled the toast iff it looked like….I dont know, i felt sorry for it. Potato salad was awesome and crab soup was good. Ok. My steak. It was ordered medium and It was for the nost part well. It was grey with no grill or frying and didnt look broiled. It looked like maybe someone turned the oven on high and baked it. If you have to guess well. I hope the management takes this for what it is..not trying to hurt feelings here but damn. The soft crab and mac wete taken off and they asked if i wanted the steak taken off to which i said no. One more thing..when I asked what hapoenned to the legs and claws…..they fell off while frying and we tried to put them on the sandwich but you see how that turned out was the reply. Ok im good.
