My photos will make sense I promise. Story time.
This was one of the most interesting dining experiences ever. This place has plenty of staff, people hustling but it was hard to tell who was being served.
First we got our pitcher of beer but with no cups. After asking for cups we were told they didn’t have any at the moment. That’s the first time I experienced that.
With food orders they were quick to take the order but the food came out slow (some dishes were forgotten) which doesn’t make sense because we the customers cook the meat. The food itself was good when we got it.
My advice: if you still choose to come here then bring your own cups

I had a great experience at Gen Korean BBQ House! The atmosphere was really nice and, unlike many other KBBQ places, the inside wasn’t smoky at all – which made it so much more enjoyable. The quality of the meats was excellent, very fresh and delicious. I also want to give a special thank you to Gabriel B, the manager, for being so attentive and making sure everything went smoothly. Definitely a spot I’d recommend and will be coming back to!

While the servers were very nice, the service was terrible. It took us a couple of times flagging down servers, managers, or anyone who could take our order or even get us our final check. We had to get up and go to the front to pay. Additionally, the food was not good either. The meat looked old, the Korean fried chicken was cold, and a couple of times, the wrong meats were brought, or multiple orders of one meat came. I would skip this KBBQ until they figure out their issues.

Honestly, this place is a freaking joke. It takes absolutely ages to get Korean BBQ, meat – at least 30 minutes in between orders. However, they’re pushing mediocre, filling appetizers and al carte cocktails quickly. Don’t come here if you want actual Korean BBQ. Manna down the street is so much more worth it.

Our favorite Korean BBQ in San Diego. Food is consistently great. Service is phenomenal. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Definitely one of our regular spots and will continue to come back w friends and family.

Let me preface the review, the place is nice, it’s clean, they offer a TON of different flavors and sides.
Now onto the actual issues;
First and most importantly, as my picture shows, the grills are ABSOLUTELY HEINOUS. This wasn’t a single grill issue, the replacement that was given was just as bad and looking at other tables, they all have this layer on them. As the grill heated up you could smell the burnt food from this uncleaned grill and that in itself was off putting. But this gunk literally came off onto the food we grilled and you could TASTE IT. I’ll be honest right now, this ruined everything for us. Our go-to is Olleh on Convoy and their grills are SPOTLESS every single time. Not sure where the disconnect is on this one but totally ruined the taste of everything. The sides tasted fine, fish katsu, fried shrimp. Tofu stew was a bit weak but that’s fine. Pork belly cuts had the most fat I’ve ever seen on a cut.
Really though, the grill thing is the clincher here. We probably won’t be back to Gen because of this, we’ll be trying Manna next and if all else fails we’ll be sticking with Olleh.

Happy to enter the restaurant and be seated right away, it wasn’t busy at all for a Saturday afternoon. Our server was Melissa S. and though she promised the “best experience” she oversold her underwhelming service. My table was there for over 3 hours! We asked repeatedly for forgotten drink orders, sauces to go with our meats, and reminders of missing items. Melissa S. talks too much, seems easily distracted, and forgets. Our party waited on her, constantly tried to look for her, we always found her talking. I have been to the Mira Mesa location plenty of times and could not believe how SLOW and forgetful the service was. Whenever we tried to ask another server for help, their response would be “I’ll find your server.” I’m glad someone found her. Very disappointed with the service; the food was fine, the alcohol was okay… we would have drank so much more alcohol if our drink orders would have been remembered the first time. Very hesitant to go back just to waste time and money. The bill also came during our first round of meats, not all were finished cooking because it had just been all delivered. Melissa S may have tried our best but our plans for night had to be delayed due to our dining experience. The music was intermittently on, sometimes it was all the speaker were working and sometimes only half the room got to enjoy music with their meals.

Gen Korean BBQ is an absolutely beautiful restaurant, from the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with great ambiance and top-tier service. As it was our first time there, our server took the time to walk us through the entire process, making sure we understood everything and felt comfortable. Her attention to detail and kindness made a big difference.
The quality of the meat was outstanding. We highly recommend trying the Gen Premium Steak (picanha) and the Hawaiian Bacon, both were incredibly flavorful. Every bite was delicious.
We ended our meal with the Mando Tango, which was a perfect way to close, sweet, tasty, and beautifully presented.
Special shoutout to Xeena, the manager on duty, who personally checked in with us throughout our meal and ensured everything was perfect. Her attentiveness elevated the whole experience.
We had a fantastic time and will definitely be coming back soon! Highly recommended.

We always love coming here the food and service are great. They always seem to be understaffed for some reason. Service was slow but still worth it every time we go. They also keep adding new menu options which is great but it will start to worry me because I dont want to lose the quality. I hope management reads this: let your servers serve and talk to us. It allows the customer to feel like we matter instead of rushing them around and not focusing on the service. The more calm and relaxed your employees are the more people want to come in and eat. You need to do better and manage your schedules better. Its not fair to your employees.

Honestly poor service, i’ve been to a couple Korean bbq’s and so far this is the first one with bad service. Don’t get me wrong they seem nice and all but whenever we would ask for something they would either take forever or not bring it at all even after reminding them constantly. I don’t get why they also don’t seem to have enough iPads for the whole staff, whenever they wouldn’t have one they would basically forget about their table. We felt like we were mostly waiting instead of eating, food was honestly alright. Ah and btw our grill wasn’t even cleaned properly at first, still had some meat left over.
