Thankfully GameDay was just around the corner, not new to either of us, but tried and true.
Our experience tonight was like night and day, and the differences were clear before the lovely young lady opened the door for us, as we could see how packed GameDay was through the windows. We were told that the wait for a table for 2 indoors was going to be 15 minutes. Which I think is a more than understandable wait time for a busy sports bar, NOT a nearly empty pub themed restaurant.
But that was for INDOOR seating, and the patio was completely empty… The fact that it was in the low 40’s miiiight have had something to do with it, but dad is a madman and I was hungry so we requested to be seated outside. The hostess looked understandably dubious, but for the second time tonight we were seated almost immediately.
The ONLY similarity in the two experiences, because despite the fact GameDay was so busy inside and that we were the only ones who chose to brave the cold the entire time we were there, our server Valerie had come out to greet us before we’d even had time to fully settle. Along with a gentleman whose name I unfortunately didn’t catch, as he had only come out to move one of their surprisingly heavy outdoor heaters close to our table for our comfort. He even came back out only a few minutes later because we’d asked Valerie when she dropped off our drinks if it could be moved to the side of the table we were both sitting on. If dad didn’t have mobility issues and half a Coronanita we would have just moved to the other side of the table ourselves, but the gentleman accommodated our request without question.
Valerie is also a real trooper, because at least dad and I had coats on, while her uniform shirt was short-sleeved. A great choice for the hot and hectic work of a server inside, not so good for serving an older customer in 45* weather. But Valerie gamely waited for dad to ramble his way back to actually remembering to order his food, which he will be the first to tell you is more consideration than he garners from me in ANY weather.
My GameDay Bites and mozzarella sticks were delicious, as expected. Unfortunately dad wasn’t QUITE as pleased with his bone-in wings, which were a bit overcooked, but good enough.
Better than all the nothing we would likely still have on our table at Donovan’s had we stayed.
All in all, a good meal made better by comparison. I would like to warn all of the bartenders and servers of GameDay to prepare themselves now, as we WILL be back, and since dad hasn’t bothered to get any new material since the turn of the century, they WILL be forced to hear the same jokes and stories every time.
I’m so sorry.
