This is a brand new Mexican restaurant which opened up about a month ago (June 2025) in the west side of Athens. The restaurant is an ode to Frida Kahlo (hence the name) and the interior is adorned with beautiful murals of Frida and other art celebrating Mexican heritage. The food was delicious. It is a more elevated version of Mexican food and a good mix between portions vs size. Our food also came out quickly. The staff overall were wonderful, friendly, and accommodating. I definitely recommend a visit. You won’t regret it.

Staff was able quickly set up table for our 20+ person parties. Love the wall painting. Very delicious seafood taco. Nice size mini taco bowl just didnt expect that much generous serving of protein shedd chicken. Did received first round of hot water. Missed the second around.

Frieda’s is very warm and welcoming. The staff is very nice. Overall it’s a good place to catch some good grub and drinks. I would say the best margh’s and food in town!

I’m from Southern CA and when traveling east, am desperate for REAL Mexican food (Mexican food is hands-down the best flavor in the Americas!). Great food. I had straight Carnitas con frijoles and loves it. Great service too!

I’ve been to Frida’s twice now. Overall, the atmosphere is good and the staff is kind, and accommodating. This review is mainly to give future visitors a heads-up: expect a higher bill, even if you’re not ordering alcohol.
A few weeks ago, my partner and I ordered two appetizers and three margaritas which came to $70 before tip. Portions were fair, though the flavors didn’t quite match what the menu descriptions suggested. The margaritas were tasty, but components from the drinks appeared to be prepared hastily and was lighter on the alcohol side given the price.
For context, the previous restaurant in this space, Ciro, had similar pricing. However, it was a different type of cuisine so a direct comparison isn’t quite fair. Still, similar dishes can be found at other Mexican restaurants in town for nearly half the price. From a design perspective, it was it easy to spot that much of the menu appeared AI-generated which felt unusual. One of my colleagues also noticed that one of the images used seemed to be a phone image from inside another business in Lancaster, Ohio called El Parian.
Overall, Frida’s is still new to the area and I may sound overly critical. As a local I miss having a restaurant where Ciro once stood and I’ll be back to give Frida’s another chance.
