The concept is interesting: a “tropical French fusion” approach with creative twists on classic French dishes. The restaurant itself is very small, spread over two floors. The ground floor functions as a bar-restaurant where you can eat at the counter, while the upper floor has a few tables and a small, pleasant balcony overlooking the street. We booked a table for two on that balcony.
For starters, my wife chose one of her favorite dishes — snails — while I went for the onion soup. For mains, I ordered duck magret, and my wife chose barramundi.
If there is one thing French Kiss cannot be criticized for, it is trying very hard to be creative. Unfortunately, for us, that creativity consistently missed the mark.
The snails were served without their shells. Visually, this already takes away part of the appeal, and while this may be subjective, we came expecting something closer to the traditional presentation. More importantly, they were prepared with a sweet profile, whereas we were craving the classic garlic-butter flavor.
The onion soup followed the same creative path. It was served in a flat metal pan and looked more like an onion chutney than a soup. Three sizeable pieces of sourdough bread were provided to soak up the soup — except there was very little liquid to soak up. Only after the meal did I realize the menu mentioned aged Comté cheese; it was there, but the taste was barely noticeable.
The biggest disappointment came with the duck magret. Magret is, in my opinion, one of the most delicate meats and is best enjoyed rosé or slightly medium-rare. To be fair, the duck itself was good — and in Indonesia, finding decent magret is not a given. Unfortunately, it was served on a bed of butternut and drowned in a red-fruit jelly. The strong sweetness completely overpowered the natural flavor of the duck. I finished the dish, but it was disappointing.
My wife ate her barramundi, and I tasted it as well. It was edible, but not particularly memorable or flavorful.
We ended with two desserts: a crème brûlée and a “Paris-Ubud,” shaped like a sweet burger. Both were far too sweet. In the Paris-Ubud dessert, I was still searching for the raspberries that were supposed to be there.
In the end, there wasn’t a single dish that didn’t disappoint us. We couldn’t help wondering whether the chef was present that evening. The food felt like it suffered from too many ideas at once, as if someone in the kitchen was trying hard to prove themselves and overshot completely.
We ordered a bottle of Côtes-du-Rhône, choosing it because we like Syrah. The wine was disappointing as well — not faulty, just average — which is not the restaurant’s fault, but it didn’t help the overall experience.
So, we didn’t end 2025 with a bang — more with a blimp.
Staff people are not very professionally trained but still they are very polite and casually nice to talk with.
I was not so hungry so it was enough for me with one salad and two entree( my hubby had his main and dolce ). I loved Italian ham salad with Bree cheese. And someone recommended french onion soup it was very delicious but pepper was too strong so personally I like more mild onion soup.
About mussels, it was too oily so if you make bread crumbs bit more bigger, not like sandy, you can avoid to use too much oil. For that size of mussels, tiny little bit butter is enough.
If I could find here earlier, I was going to come here more often to find my favourite . Inside of restaurant is very cute and cosy and it was wonderful that I did not have to wipe my face because of sweat all the time with my hand towel.
Thank you for nice dinner.
ごちそうさまでした。
The place is quite small, but cozy — it really gives off the vibe of an authentic French bistro. Overall, a charming spot with great food and wonderful service. I’d definitely come back!
Being in Ubud means you naturally end up visiting a lot of French restaurants, I don’t know why, but there are so many here. French Kiss was on my list specifically because I wanted to come for L’apéro, and of course, I had to order a Kir Royale.
It’s honestly so hard to find this drink in Indonesia. Even in Jakarta, I’ve only found one bistro that serves a proper Kir Royale, so I was really impressed that French Kiss actually has it on the menu.
The taste was a bit different from what I’ve had before, but still very pleasant and interesting, especially paired with their charcuterie cold cuts. Everything we ordered was delicious.
The servers were also incredibly friendly. They chatted with us a few times and made the experience feel warm and welcoming.
I’ll definitely come back to try more of their dishes.
We ended up going back to French Kiss and were there three days in a row we loved it so much! The food is incredibly! Especially the escargot, me and my partner haven’t tasted something so delicious! I loved that you could watch the chefs cook and how much time and detail they put into each and every dish! We already can’t wait to go back thank you French Kiss for an unforgettable dining and eating experience !
Pasta bolognese wagyu was perfectly cooked with crunchy parmesan. Well recommended to visit!
